Joe Thuney Secures $51 Million Extension with Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs have announced a significant contract extension for offensive lineman Joe Thuney, solidifying his role as a key player for the team. The three-year contract is frontloaded, leading to the impressive total value of $51 million. It has $33.5 million fully guaranteed at signing, one of the richest deals ever for an offensive lineman in the league. This contract arrives just as Thuney has been demonstrating his versatility and talent to play a lot of different places on the field.

For 2024, Thuney confirmed his correctness by not missing a beat with 895 snaps played at left guard. He easily transitioned to left tackle, adding 217 additional snaps. He stepped into Wanya Morris’ left tackle spot, effective Week 15. His pass protection of QB Patrick Mahomes’ blind side was key all the way through KC’s playoff run to Super Bowl LIX victory. His steely performance through the whole season has granted him respect and admiration from teammates and coaches—both on and off the field.

Even more than his talent, Thuney’s durability jumps out at you. He hasn’t missed more than two games in any of his nine NFL seasons and has started 146 games. His boring diversity to breed success. His uniformity is what makes his success so successful. As of the last two seasons, he has the best pass block win rate at 97.8%. This impressive statistic underscores his ability to effectively protect quarterbacks and contribute to the overall performance of the offensive line.

The honors Thuney earned during his career only add to the accolades, recognition and value that he brings to the Chiefs. His performance earned him first-team All-Pro honors in 2019 and 2020 as the Browns showed improvement with him anchoring their offensive line. In 2025, he was elected to the Pro Bowl for the third consecutive year. He was named the team’s MVP last season by his peers and received the Derrick Thomas Award for his unselfishness on and off the field.

Ryan Poles all but confirmed extending Thuney is a top priority this offseason. For starters, he knows how critical Thuney’s role is to this team. The new contract, valued at $17.5 million per season, reflects both Thuney’s performance and the Chiefs’ commitment to maintaining a strong offensive line.
