Atlanta United’s talented rookie Zaccharie Risacher came oh-so-close to unanimous consensus as the top rookie in the league on this week’s All-Rookie Team selection. He ended up winning 99 of the 100 votes, a testament to his outstanding rookie season. This year, he was in the company of a number of other exceptional players who raised the bar for their teams and the league.
Castle chaired the selection committee. Beyond just making all 100 ballots, he led all rookies in total points, field goals made and steals. Castle never expected to play in 80 games this season, let alone start 47 of them. His production was equally staggering as he averaged 14.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game. His historic performance raised the bar for future rookies looking to top his accolades.
Risacher wasn’t the only major performer. Zach Edey stood out, claiming 73 first-team votes and 27 second-team votes, cementing his status as one of the best players this season. Edey being on all 100 ballots speaks to that recognition of being the best player in the league. His positive impact on his team has been winning – no, substantially winning – which have only enhanced his reputation.
Teammate and fellow big man Jaylen Wells from Memphis made his own presence felt this year, giving Edey some support on the floor. Their collective, communicative craft on the field has made that on-field synergy a marveled-at feature of the league’s vibrant, competitive palette.
The roster was featured many esteemed talents. Alex Sarr from Washington, Kel’el Ware from Miami, Matas Buzelis from Chicago, Yves Missi from New Orleans, Donovan Clingan from Portland and Bub Carrington from Washington were among those who excelled. Each of these players demonstrated exceptional skill throughout the season, contributing to their teams’ successes and earning their spots on the prestigious All-Rookie Team.
Castle’s accomplishment in winning the rookie class with a perfect score is indicative of his individual greatness. It’s a testament to the incredible quality of talent that’s entering the league. Whether it’s attention on rising stars like Risacher—or existing superstars like Edey—the future of the sport is bright.
