Travis Hunter Shines as a Promising Dual Threat for Jaguars

Travis Hunter is a first year wideout/DB with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He’s turned a lot of heads during training camp, and for good reason! Hunter’s performance has drawn early acclaim from his new quarterback Trevor Lawrence. He highlights Hunter’s impact on the offense and how valuable Hunter’s two-way play makes him to the team.

Hunter has spent the majority of his time on the Jaguars’ offensive side of the ball, putting his skills to work as a dynamic playmaking receiver. He dabbled on offense as a ball handler, and he impressed by attending defensive meetings at rookie minicamp and making the best of his versatility. For example, even last week he has shown a willingness to adapt and do whatever it takes to help the team, spending time at cornerback.

Quarterback Trevor Lawrence has been most impressed by Hunter’s work ethic and athleticism. He observed that Hunter has a “nonstop motor,” something that was clear from their first few exchanges online. Hunter’s unforgiving motor makes him different in practice. He repeatedly links up with Lawrence on several occasions in both 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills.

“Ball skills, running after the catch, he’s very explosive,” – Trevor Lawrence

Lawrence’s observations extend beyond just Hunter’s physical abilities. He complimented Hunter on his comprehensive knowledge for the game. Each day, Hunter provides an abundance of “juice”—that’s short-hand for energy, inspiration and creativity—to the whole team. This energy not only serves to uplift each respective team, but raises the overall quality of competition in training as well.

Of course, it hasn’t all been smooth sailing. In practice ahead of the game, Hunter had been the intended target on one of Lawrence’s two interceptions. Lawrence’s throw got away from him, sailing high and landing in an interception. This instance was a realistic growing experience for the two as they continue to develop their chemistry.

With the Jaguars trying to put Liam Coen’s offense in quickly, Hunter is having a highly encouraging camp. Tackling such complexity had Lawrence feeling optimistic about the new system, saying it forces players to come in highly prepared. To really design play in a flexible way, he underscored Coen’s approach. This player-centric approach provides clearer guardrails while priming players for success.

“It’s great. I mean it puts a lot on the players. You have to know your stuff, but it gives you all the answers,” – Trevor Lawrence
