NFL Owners to Consider Player Participation in 2028 Olympics

The National Football League (NFL) will host their next owners meeting in Eagan, Minnesota. Thus, they’ll be lobbying Congress to allow their athletes to play in the 2028 Summer Olympics. The Summer Olympics are scheduled for July 14 – July 30, 2028. Flag football as an official sport means serious incentive and excitement from the league’s commissioner, NFL team owners and hierarchy.

After all, as recently as last month in Palm Beach, Florida, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones held meetings that included top league and team officials. They rallied around NFL players going to the Olympics. Their support underscores a rising wave of excitement for the participation of NFL athletes at this international sporting event.

In fact, the Olympics occur at an ideal time for NFL calendar. For domestic players, time off during the Olympic period is the norm. This timing provides athletes a wonderful opportunity to put their talents on display for the world. It lets them do so without running afoul of their normal NFL responsibilities.

During the meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday, league owners will consider a resolution regarding the participation of NFL players in flag football at the Olympics. We will give this resolution consideration along with other league business at our regularly scheduled joint meeting.

Proponents say more athletes participating will raise awareness for the sport of flag football. They further contend that the NFL would reap enormous rewards from it.

“Participation by NFL players in flag football during the 2028 Summer Olympics … will support such growth and advance several league interests, including increasing fan and public interest in flag football, expanding the global reach of the NFL, and providing greater opportunities for fan engagement and for our league partners.” – Source unspecified.

The resolution addresses ensuring that participation does not conflict with player’s league and club obligations. This method addresses any issues Team Management and Coaches might have.
