More than 100 basketball prospects have gathered in Chicago for the highly anticipated NBA Draft Combine and agency pro days, showcasing their skills in front of scouts and coaches. Yaxel Lendeborg figures prominently among them as the highest-ranked prospect. This UAB/Michigan power forward/center was the only one of the 10 players projected as a first-round pick to show up and really compete with this much gusto.
More than anything else, it was Lendeborg’s standout performance in drills and 3-on-3 play that captured everyone’s interest. He definitely made his case as the top contender for the upcoming draft. Notably, Michigan’s Dusty May, who may become Lendeborg’s future coach, attended the event to support him, accompanied by much of his coaching staff. Every day the atmosphere was just electric, as scouts and trainers intently observed each player’s skills and athletic ability.
Standout Performances
Cedric Coward proved to be the best shot of the day in Tuesday’s session, ranking first-place in three of the four shooting drills. His accuracy and composure under pressure impressed many scouts, leaving them eager to see how he progresses throughout the combine. In addition to Coward’s performance, Dylan Harper has garnered attention as the best available talent at the No. 2 pick. Draft analysts are of the mind that he would be an asset to any roster. They’re counting on him to be the first safeties’ name off the board in the draft.
“The Tatum injury is seismic and league changing,” commented an NBA team executive, hinting at how unforeseen events could reshape team strategies heading into the draft.
The combine was a great opportunity to see plenty of other top prospects making their mark. Drake Powell grabbed the attention of scouts around the country with an impressive 43-inch max vertical jump, the best recorded jump thus far at the event. He put on a show in the agility drills, coming in fifth place during the pro lane agility drill. On top of that, he clocked the third-highest no step vertical jump. In sum, these performances speak to Robinson’s rare athleticism and certainly the makings of a bright future in this league.
Key Withdrawals and Rankings
Boogie Fland, a former five-star prospect and McDonald’s All-American, just made the transfer portal right before last month’s deadline. He certainly turned heads when he announced he would pull out of the draft and head back to college hoops for more seasoning. From an outlook perspective, this was a smart decision that could only serve to improve his draft chances next year as he works to develop even more.
Alabama point guard Mark Sears came into the week rated No. 42 in ESPN’s draft rankings. He is slated to be a second-round-type selection. His physical tools, roidy-bear accusations aside, grew markedly. Since ESPN last measured, he’s added almost an inch to his height and now has a massive 7-foot wingspan. Scouts will be most interested in how these new tweaks to his game play out as he faces the best competition in front of them.
The reality is that not every prospect is bringing their A-game. Mark Bartelstein, an agent representing one of the players, noted that “Kon sprained his ankle three weeks ago and is not all the way back yet.” He added that “he’s at 85% now and we want him at 100%. He’s really close. Hopefully, he’s back by the end of the week and can participate in our pro day Friday,” indicating that injury management is crucial during this competitive period.
Injuries Impacting Prospects
Potential injuries hang like a dark cloud above many of this year’s combine invitees. Duke’s projected No. 1 overall pick, Cooper Flagg, did not participate in athletic testing or shooting drills due to an injury. This puts a question mark on his preparedness for the 2024 draft. Teams will be watching his progress carefully as they make their decisions to pursue in free agency.
As the NBA Draft Combine continues throughout the week, scouts will keep a keen eye on performances and player developments. A lot of prospects are looking to raise their stock before the draft. Each workout and match provides essential information into what they can bring to the pro ranks.
