Jordan Spieth, a prominent figure in professional golf, has expressed his deep admiration for the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club, stating it holds significant importance for him. In a one-on-one tournament shootout, his answer in a recent interview might surprise you. His enthusiasm shone through as he declared he’d chosen this eminent occasion over any other in his illustrious life.
Spieth’s ensuing 66-start winless streak is the second-longest of his career. With Cole, this season some of his starts have been good, some bad. He had three top 10 finishes and six top 25s in only eleven starts. This fabulous showing is a positive indication that he’s bounced back nicely from last August’s surgery to repair a torn tendon sheath in his left wrist. His recent hot streak has made him and fellow golfer Scottie Scheffler the odds on favorites going into the big dance.
Looking back on his competitive path, Spieth finished T3 at Bethpage Black State Park last year when the PGA Championship was held there. He wound up six shots short of the winner, Brooks Koepka. This year, he is finding himself feeling more energized and coming back to the fight. Spieth conceded Rory McIlroy’s recent Masters win had added to the narrative that is building up to the PGA Championship. He noted that without McIlroy’s win, the storylines leading into this year’s event would have been markedly different.
Spieth has his own personal connection to Quail Hollow Club, which Spieth himself has taken to calling the “Country Club of Rory McIlroy,” for good reason. That special bond that exists between the game’s greatest professional golfers serves as a source of inspiration and competitive fire, and Spieth fits the mold. McIlroy suggested that Spieth could be the next golfer to achieve a career Grand Slam at the PGA Championship, further motivating him as he approaches this critical tournament.
It’s been six years since Spieth’s last victory, his most recent major triumph coming at the 2017 Open Championship played in England. Even so, he remains hopeful that his persistence will pay off with future wins. He expressed eagerness to “throw his hat in the ring and give it a chance come the weekend this week” at Quail Hollow.
As he reflects on his health and performance, Spieth candidly stated, “It’s hard to tell if it was preventing anything that I could or couldn’t do, so I’m not going to say that it’s everything.” He’s been candid about the process of his recovery. For him, knowing that his wrist won’t dislocate or subluxate brings great peace of mind. “Just the ease of not worrying about it is really nice,” he added.
Despite a successful return from injury, Spieth’s path has been rocky. He remarked, “Anybody who’s come back from an injury, you want to be out there doing more and more and more.” This determination has driven him to improve his game and maintain a competitive edge as he prepares for the upcoming tournament.
