Hull City Parts Ways with Head Coach Ruben Selles

It is with regret that Hull City can confirm the termination of head coach Ruben Selles’ contract. This is the third managerial change in less than a year since owner Acun Ilicali took charge. Selles, who was in charge for under six months, came to the club last December after moving from Reading.

At 41 years old and from Spain, Selles had everything stacked against him in his short time in charge. He left with 9 wins in 28 matches. That stunning streak helped Hull City stay out of the League One basement zone. The team finished their campaign with a spirited 1–1 home draw with Portsmouth on the final day. This disappointing outcome was instrumental in the decision to mutually part ways with Selles.

That hasn’t been the case for Acun Ilicali, who has owned Hull City since early 2022, as he’s endured a dramatic stretch with his managerial hires. His initial little turnover was Liam Rosenior, who he sacked in November 2022. Rosenior immigrated to Europe to train with the French national team Strasbourg. He has enjoyed immense success there, recently guiding them to sixth place in Ligue 1 with one match remaining in the campaign.

The club’s governing board reiterated the need for new leadership, saying that they were determined to pursue an agenda for change.

“Following a thorough review of football operations after a challenging campaign, the club feels a change in leadership is necessary to move the team forward in line with our ambitions.” – Hull City

As they look to progress, Hull City are now looking for the fifth permanent manager during Ilicali’s ownership. The search comes at a critical juncture as the club aims to realign itself with its long-term objectives and aspirations.

With this latest decision, the club hope they have built a more sustainable platform for ongoing success. They want to address the challenges that accompany a high turnover of leadership. Fans and players alike will be hoping for some much-needed clarity and direction as Hull City readies itself for what promises to be an exciting next chapter.
