The Indian Premier League (IPL) just took a one-week hiatus as hostility between India and Pakistan rises. This decision follows a pattern of escalating violence. Just last month, twenty-six civilians were cruelly killed in Indian-administered Kashmir. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) today announced its decision. They underscored the extreme need for safety and security for players, staff, and media participating in the tournament.
The BCCI has blamed Pakistan for harboring the terrorists responsible for the attacks in Kashmir. In the face of such accusations, Pakistan has firmly rejected such claims. Now, new accusations have surfaced that Pakistan attempted to strike three Indian military bases with drones and missiles. This has set off a wave of new security fears. Pakistan has denied these assertions, making the emerging diplomatic politics even more complicated between the two South Asian countries.
IPL match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals plunged into sudden turmoil. It was prematurely poached by partnership progress thieves curtailing their cause mid-game in Dharamsala due to a floodlight failure. Dharamsala’s location just south of the highly militarized and contested region of Kashmir makes security a major issue. Out of an abundance of caution, we’re going to evacuate players, staff and media from the building. This decision marks a reversal amid outcry following these events.
The BCCI noted, “While the BCCI reposes full faith in the strength and preparedness of our armed forces, the Board considered it prudent to act in the collective interest of all stakeholders.” The strength of this policy statement lies in their pledge to keep people safe through navigation of an increasingly complicated geopolitical climate.
Seven of the England players will still be active in the tournament when it picks up play. This is in continuation to the recent developments around the event. This includes white-ball captain Jos Buttler, fast bowler Jofra Archer, and all-rounder Jacob Bethell among their ranks. A further ten England players will be taking part in this year’s IPL.
The BCCI says it will be announcing details on the revised program and destinations for organizing the tournament. They will need to do so only after a careful determination with agency and stakeholder input.
This year’s events have renewed calls to hold major cricket tournaments in other venues. As a result, the rest of the matches in the Pakistan Super League needed to be moved. They fled to the United Arab Emirates after growing afraid for their safety. In the past, several IPL editions have been held outside of India, primarily in South Africa and the UAE. While unfortunate, it again proves how nimble the league has been able to be with new circumstances.
