Derek McInnes, the current manager of Kilmarnock, is in discussions with Heart of Midlothian regarding a potential move to Tynecastle Park. Neil Critchley, who was recently sacked just two weeks ago, saw his exit follow a disastrous campaign on behalf of Hearts. McInnes has given Kilmarnock his word that he will not leave the club until the end of the current season. He points to his own commitment, done while negotiations continue.
McInnes has guided Kilmarnock to safety in the Premiership, notably leading the team to a crucial 3-2 victory over Dundee last Saturday. This victory clinched their third straight year atop the league! It further encouraged the idea that McInnes’ last matches with Kilmarnock would be home and away to Motherwell and Hearts. He is contracted with Kilmarnock until 2027, which will complicate negotiations with Hearts considerably.
According to various sources, Kilmarnock and Hearts have settled on a compensation package that would allow McInnes to become the new Tynecastle boss. Just as important as the opportunity is joining Hearts would be a big deal for McInnes, who would rank it as the third biggest club in Scotland. He’s previously stated his wish for Hearts to compete with Rangers and Celtic, who have dominated Scottish soccer for decades.
“I’m led to believe that the clubs agreed terms yesterday, discussions are ongoing from that.” – Derek McInnes
Kris Boyd, another former player and commentator, has lauded McInnes for his remarkable accomplishments at Kilmarnock. He strongly champions the idea that McInnes deserves one more crack with a bigger club. Boyd lauded McInnes’ successful stint at Aberdeen as a reason for McInnes coming in. Achievements with McInnes Under McInnes, the team won the League Cup in 2013 and finished fourth, thus qualifying them for European football in his final season.
You look at what he was able to accomplish with Aberdeen. They were a big club that are chasing the bottom, and Hearts have had a considerably stinking season. – Kris Boyd
Even with his excellent record and close ties to Kilmarnock, McInnes has a difficult choice before him. His time at Kilmarnock hasn’t been all flat achievements. His leadership steered the team to safety, and his walk-on coaching tenure brought unprecedented success to the program.
