A Historic Journey

The final was a glorious new chapter for Sunderland, who were bottom of the league in December. Their renaissance is largely due to an incredible reversal in fortunes after combatants entered the second half of the season. This was buoyed further by a strong belief amongst the squad that they were competing with teams receiving parachute payments, and were therefore Championship play-off contenders.

Frank Lampard, Coventry’s manager, acknowledged Sunderland’s achievement while expressing pride in his own players’ performance over both legs of the semi-final. He commented on how Coventry had been the better side for long periods of the match, even at home.

“Firstly, congratulations to Sunderland. But I’ve got immense pride in my players, over the two games, we dominated at home and dominated huge periods of this game.” – Frank Lampard

Coventry played with heart and determination all season long and made their mark in the play-off run. The equalizing goal was Mason-Clark’s, bringing the tie level. While this moment was a testament to their great potential, it set their sights on a great and focused upcoming season.

The Road Ahead
