Keith Mitchell is continuing to show the world just how good of a golfer he really is. On Friday, he played 3-under 67, giving him a one-shot lead after two rounds of the Truist Championship at Philadelphia Cricket Club’s Wissahickon Course. Mitchell has completed a strong 12-under. He’s getting very close and you’ll see him very close to winning next week’s PGA Championship at Quail Hollow.
Mitchell’s sensational play comes after an incredible round one where he shot an astounding 61, Mitchell’s career-lowest round. This is the fourth occasion he has taken the 18-hole lead in his career. Perhaps even more incredulously, this is the third time this season he has done it! His steady all-around game has propelled him to the top of the standings all week, even as rainy weather made for difficult playing conditions on Friday.
Mitchell battled through the second round, making up for two bogeys with five birdies for a balanced and strong performance. Most memorably, he drained a miraculous 53-foot birdie putt, crystallizing his remarkable talent on display all tournament long. He demonstrated a remarkable three-hole run of birdies, showcasing his ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities. After dropping bogeys at Nos. 2 and 11, Mitchell focused back down almost immediately. He didn’t let up, making birdies in quick succession to keep the momentum on his side.
Mitchell is winless in 200 career PGA Tour events. If his early season form is anything to go by he’s certainly primed to add to that tally! He has a remarkable four wins at the Wells Fargo Championship, which is played at Quail Hollow. He knows the venue well and is obviously preparing for the 2025 PGA Championship there.
As the tournament continues, everyone is still focused on Mitchell. His ability to navigate both the course and the weather conditions will be vital in determining his success at the Truist Championship. Golf enthusiasts will be keenly watching how he performs in the remaining rounds and how this experience shapes his approach in the forthcoming major championship.
