Rory McIlroy, the only active five-time major champion and career grand slam winner, is giving us something to look forward to. He is set to headline the men’s Australian Open for the next two years! The prestigious tournament will take place in Melbourne, where McIlroy aims to rekindle his success after last competing in the event in 2014.
At 35 years young, McIlroy is the rarefied world No. 2. Just ask this young upstart, who recently enjoyed a glorious victory lap after winning the 2025 Masters Tournament. This victory represented a key turning point in his career. It did so by accomplishing his career grand slam and by finally establishing him as one of that sport’s true elite players. In 2013, McIlroy hoisted Australia’s Stonehaven Cup, winning the Australian Open. He matched up against fellow golfer Adam Scott in a riveting duel.
The upcoming Australian Open is set to be held at two of the finest golf courses in the world: The Royal Melbourne Golf Club and Kingston Heath Golf Club. This year’s event will be even better with McIlroy’s participation. Although he is going to get traded, he’s arguably one of the most celebrated best players in the game right now.
James Sutherland, chief executive of Golf Australia, said he was thrilled with McIlroy’s promise. He acknowledged that just the idea of having McIlroy swing a club on the famed Melbourne sandbelt is a tantalizing proposition for golf enthusiasts around the world.
“Rory McIlroy, one of the best to ever play our game, playing on the world-renowned Melbourne sandbelt, is a mouth-watering proposition for golf fans,” – James Sutherland
Sutherland enjoined everyone to help elevate the prestige of the national championship. He views McIlroy’s participation as a significant step forward in reaching that goal.
“We are committed to elevating the status of our national championship, and this announcement is a significant step in that direction.” – James Sutherland
McIlroy, meanwhile, has strong commitments to the Australian Open. He intends to make his debut in the PGA Championship coming up in Charlotte, where he’s the odds-on favorite to take home the title. His recent major accomplishments along with his track record of execution have done nothing but raise the expectations for what he will do next.
McIlroy said he was looking forward to returning to Australia and playing at such a storied tournament.
“I’m proud to be committing to the Australian Open for the next two years, especially with it being played on the world-class Melbourne Sandbelt, somewhere I’ve always wanted to play professionally,” – Rory McIlroy
In doing so, he acknowledged the crucial importance of the Australian Open in helping to grow golf’s global and international game. He further praised the event as an unequivocal success, looking to its future in coming years.
“The success of the Australian Open is important for the global game, and I’m incredibly confident it will thrive again this year, especially with it being staged in one of the world’s great sporting cities and on two of the finest golf courses in the world over the next two years: The Royal Melbourne Golf Club and Kingston Heath Golf Club.” – Rory McIlroy
