London City Lionesses Achieve Historic Promotion to Women’s Super League

The London City Lionesses have secured a historic promotion to the Women’s Super League (WSL) for the first time in the club’s brief history. Kynisca Sports International has had the honor of managing the team, who’s been resilient through tremendous growth and success. It has been incredibly competitive in the Women’s Championship the last five years. Their record-setting fourth-place finish now seems a world away from the season before in 2021, as they finished eighth.

Michele Kang, dubbed ‘the first mogul of women’s football’, is the owner of London City Lionesses. Since her acquisition, the club has prospered by taking advantage of Kynisca Sports International’s centralized resources. Access to these resources catalyzes their work, advancing development through better science, technology, scouting, and staff development. Public support has been essential to the Lionesses’ success over the past few weeks.

The Lionesses were on fire in the 2022 Women’s Championship. Third place in one year and runners-up in the next had set up their promotion. Manager Jocelyn Precheur’s appointment last summer turned out to be key. There’s absolutely no doubt that he has, personally, and impressively, directed the team toward this incredible achievement. Asllani’s signing, along with the captaincy, has made San Diego’s already-dangerous squad even stronger. She generates a winning culture, having come over from Manchester City and previously, Real Madrid.

On the last day of the season, the Lionesses drew 2-2 with second-place Birmingham in a barnburner. With this win, they guaranteed their promotion to the WSL for the 2025/26 season and clinched the championship title! This historic outcome not only underscores their growth on the pitch. It truly marks a new era in the club’s history.

In 2019, after separating from Millwall, the club semi-professionally registered, gaining independence from the traditional grassroots nature of most typical clubs. Come 2023, though, it’s all in on women’s football. Since then, it has cultivated a strong identity and fanbase, reflecting its commitment to excellence and competitiveness in women’s sports.

The Lionesses are still preparing to make the move to the WSL permanent, though. They’ll replace Crystal Palace, another south London club who have been relegated from England’s top women’s league. This move marks a radical shake up of the landscape of women’s football in the capital. Yet it highlights the positive momentum of clubs such as the London City Lionesses.
