Damian Lillard Makes Remarkable Return After Health Setback

Damian Lillard, the 34-year-old point guard for the Milwaukee Bucks, put on a jaw-dropping encore performance. He had to overcome a grave health challenge to make it there. Lillard was diagnosed with DVT in his right calf. He has, however, recently been given the go-ahead to return to full basketball activities after coming off of his blood-thinning regimen. From that point, he went on to miss the last 14 regular season games. As such, expectations have been high about how he’ll hold up in the playoffs.

Deep vein thrombosis occurs when a pathological clot develops within a blood vessel. This obstruction prevents blood from flowing back into the heart. In reality, it’s a dangerous condition that carries serious health consequences, especially for our athletes. Lillard’s speedy recovery came as a shock to most of the basketball world and proved his commitment to getting back on the court.

Lillard did miss Game 1 of the Bucks’ playoff series vs. the Indiana Pacers. He was well enough to make an incredibly thrilling return in Game 2! He only played in three games during the series, but his resolve and artistry on the court were on full display. His play has been key all season long. Hunter finished in the top 10 of the NBA’s ranks in scoring at 24.9 points per game and in assists at 7.1 assists per game. He brought home his ninth All-Star Game selection earlier this season.

Lillard’s road back to playing shape didn’t come without its own complications. In Game 4 against the Pacers, he took a hit. He required help to leave the court midway through the first quarter, and the team ended up losing 129-103. Bucks coach Doc Rivers shared his reaction after talking with Lillard about his injury.

“I can’t believe I’m here.” – Doc Rivers

Right after returning, Lillard showed just how deep his devotion to the Blazers and their playoff dreams ran. He voiced his determination with a powerful statement:

“I’m not going out this way.” – Doc Rivers

His summer devotion, and remarkable recovery, have uplifted his teammates and fans during their run through the playoffs. He’s proven to be a special player taking the long road after his comeback from adversity. Over the years, this determination has illustrated his bulldog-like tenacity as one of sports’ most fierce competitors.
