Crystal Palace put together an incredible performance at home to Tottenham Hotspur. They came away with a dominating 2-0 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday. The game served as a thrilling final tune-up before the FA Cup final. On either side, there were contenders with an abundance of talent clamoring to prove themselves.
Tottenham, in their first game managed by Ange Postecoglou, started the day in a thrilling line-up. The squad included Kinsky, Porro, Danso, Davies, Spence, Sarr, Bentancur, Gray, Kulusevski, Tel and Odobert. However, the home side faced early setbacks. Our newest winger, Dejan Kulusevski, limped off the field after just 16 minutes of play due to a nasty collision with Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi. His leaving was monumental in that it left Spurs lost and unable to find any continuity.
Heung-min Son returned to the squad from injury as a substitute after missing seven matches. Though he had the intangible, all-powerful-George-on-the-bench thing going, he couldn’t change the momentum for his team. Tottenham had introduced all three of Moore, Bissouma and Son within the first hour; however, they nonetheless could not get on the scoresheet.
A Strong Start for Crystal Palace
Crystal Palace’s tactical approach under Oliver Glasner was a winning one, as they were on the front foot for much of the game from the opening kickoff. The Eagles were able to trot out a lineup that included Henderson, Richards, Lacroix, Guehi, Munoz, Hughes, Lerma, Mitchell, Sarr, Eze, and Mateta.
One player who really caught my attention was Eberechi Eze, who capped a sensational performance by scoring one of Palace’s two goals against Arsenal. Particularly notable about the team’s first half was their effort and focus as they played with great energy and intensity. Eze scored a wonderful solo goal in the process—the only goal of the match. Ismaila Sarr and Maxence Lacroix both saw their goals ruled out for offside.
Daniel Munoz came close to leveling with a shot that rattled the crossbar. Shortly afterwards, Mateta fired off a powerful shot of his own, but Spurs keeper Brandon Austin was up to the challenge. Glasner acknowledged the team’s performance post-match.
“It’s a credit to the players. The energy level, the intensity and effort and commitment from the beginning… We kept going and were rewarded.” – Oliver Glasner
Postecoglou’s Disappointment
In contrast to Palace’s success on the pitch, Postecoglou expressed disappointment in his team’s performance. He mentioned how many guys had a chance to step up and make their case, but didn’t take advantage of it.
This was unacceptable Postecoglou was adamant about the lack of urgency and commitment shown by his squad in this pivotal game. It was a rare opportunity, and he stressed the importance of players seizing such opportunities when they were there.
“Guys had an opportunity today to put their name forward and put pressure on the guys who played the other night but there wasn’t any compelling evidence.” – Ange Postecoglou
He was upset to be without Kulusevski so early in the match. He challenged his own team to make sure they are equipped for what lies ahead.
“I still felt we weren’t anywhere near the level we needed to be today despite all that stuff… We should have still been better today than we were.” – Ange Postecoglou
Looking Ahead
Each side preparing for their Opening Day matchups. Palace’s victory provides them with some healthy momentum and confidence just as they prepare for their FA Cup final. Glasner’s priority will be to keep the positive momentum that has been developed through this fixture.
For Tottenham, Postecoglou now enters a key period of introspection and recalibration. As important players return from injury, some of their teammates need to improve their games. More relevantly, he has to get his new squad together to maximize their performance ahead of the next match.
