San Antonio Spurs rookie Stephon Castle has already accomplished it. It’s no surprise that he’s been awarded the NBA Rookie of the Year for the 2023 season, due in large part to his incredible consistency all year long. Castle took the rookie slate by storm, topping all rookies in points and steals. He made history, winning all but four of the 96 possible first-place votes in the official voting.
From the outset, Castle was open about his desire to go big. He exuded quiet confidence about what he could do. As he stated, “From Day 1 it was absolutely a priority of mine to come in with—again, all the confidence I had in myself as a player. His determination and skill on the court enabled him to become the fifth rookie in Spurs history to score more than 1,000 points in a single season.
Regardless of other wins, this is a huge win for the Spurs. Now, they can proudly tout back-to-back winners of the Rookie of the Year award! No surprise here, as Victor Wembanyama took home this award last year. With Castle’s recent victory, the franchise enters an elite circle, becoming just the second in more than a half-century to boast consecutive top-rookie winners, joining the Buffalo Braves’ Bob McAdoo and Ernie DiGregorio in the early 1970s.
Castle’s achievement is perhaps even more impressive considering the competitive field she was up against. RES #20 – Zaccharie Risacher received all five first-place votes. He displayed tremendous talent on his way to winning Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month for February and March. Jaylen Wells received three first-place votes, illustrating just how much talent was in this year’s rookie class.
The award signifies not only Castle’s individual excellence, but it shines a light on a growing trend of international talent coming into the league. Risacher wanted to make history. If he does, he’ll be the first player outside the United States to win the award two years in a row, joining Ben Simmons and Luka Doncic (2018 and 2019).
To go along with his scoring abilities, Castle’s competitive spirit has impressed other well-known players and cemented his drive to improve. Chris Paul on Castle’s competitive drive: It’s like Christmas Day every time I get to see him play. One, the very first thing that I look for in a teammate, in anyone, is their level of competitiveness. That’ll get you a lot further than just talent, trust me. And I realized right off the bat, just like he was competitive. I was like, ‘OK, cool. This is going to be easy.’”
The importance of Castle’s accomplishment goes far beyond individual trophies and stats. It represents a larger story in the NBA about the battle between player development and success versus instant gratification and failure. The Spurs, of course, have a long tradition of developing young talent. Castle’s victory was a clear indication of their commitment to developing a solid platform for success in the seasons to come.
