With their first pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos pulled a surprise. They selected cornerback Jahdae Barron from the University of Texas. Barron enjoyed a great college career, showing exceptional versatility. Consequently, he came off the board as the best defensive player available, let alone at his position and the best player on the Broncos’ draft board.
Barron was an integral part of the Texas Longhorns defense. He made teams bend to his incredible talent by moving all over defensive backfield, playing cornerback, dime, safety and hybrid roles. His ability to adapt to various defensive schemes highlighted his potential to excel in multiple positions at the professional level.
During his last season at Texas, Barron intercepted five passes and played over 500 snaps at outside cornerback, slot cornerback, and box safety. His performance earned him high praise for his football intelligence and production during games, solidifying his reputation as one of the highest-graded players on the Broncos’ draft board.
The Broncos understood the importance of having versatile players who can fill in at multiple positions and highlighted Barron’s versatility. Head Coach Sean Payton noted the importance of such versatile players, stating, “These are premium positions, and this type of player is less available than so many other positions.”
Barron’s selection came after considerable anticipation. As he awaited his draft status, he recalled a moment when his mother asked him about his standing around pick 17. The Broncos ended up drafting him anyway. He humbly praised his new team’s coaches and scouting staff that helped build that draft room.
“I thought I could end up at every pick,” – Jahdae Barron
After being picked, Barron made it clear that he was willing to do whatever it takes and be whatever the Denver Broncos needed him to be. He stated, “It wasn’t a big task, it was a mental and physical thing,” emphasizing the challenge he faced while adapting to various positions throughout his college career.
Even better for the Broncos was Barron’s selection fitting perfectly with their strategy to surround Von Miller with playmakers and strengthen their defense. Payton appreciated the value of selecting Barron. He mentioned that it was important to get past a few picks to be able to get him. He remarked, “Looking at the grade, there were probably six picks we had to get past as he sat there.”
To get himself ready for committing to the Broncos, Barron will fly as the earliest of the team’s seven draft picks accepted their rookie minicamp late next week. He expressed confidence in his ability to transition to the professional level, crediting his college coaches for providing him with extensive practice reps that prepared him for high-pressure situations.
“I soak a lot of information in from coaches,” – Jahdae Barron
Barron’s diverse skill set and proven track record indicate that he will be a valuable asset to the Broncos’ defensive lineup. His work ethic and passion for constant improvement will be key as he makes the transition to the NFL – both culturally and literally.
