Jayden Higgins, a rookie wide receiver for the Houston Texans, had a record-breaking debut! He just signed a fully guaranteed four-year deal that totals $11,700,824. Chosen as the No. 34 selection in last week’s NFL draft from Iowa State, Higgins is already making history. He is the first second-round pick in league history to sign a fully guaranteed deal. This unique agreement is another remarkable chapter in the NFL’s changing story on rookie contracts.
Higgins finished his collegiate career at Louisville with a bang. In the 2024 season, he accumulated 1,183 receiving yards, scoring 10 touchdowns. His phenomenal production while at Iowa State caught the eye of the Texans’ front office, and rightfully so. The result of that was they grabbed him in the second round of the draft. General Manager Nick Caserio’s belief in Higgins’ potential was not just a tacit conviction, as he acted swiftly to pave the way for this groundbreaking pact.
We all know what he can do,” Caserio said of their familiarity with Higgins’ skills. What’s more, head coach DeMeco Ryans has featured Higgins’ utility as well.… Jayden [is] just a big target,” Ryans said of his standout receiver, alluding to his size and the mismatch he provides defensively.
The importance of Higgins’ agent, Chris Cabott of EquitySports, cannot be overlooked for how integral he was in getting this deal done. Why it matters This deal is another example of the increasing trend of teams restricting operations on rookie contracts, including second-round picks. It sets a $200 million standard for future negotiations.
Ryans expanded on Higgins’ qualities, making a comparison to Texans wide receiver Nico Collins. “I know a lot of people said he’s very similar to Nico and what he’s able to do, but you get a receiver of his stature and with his catch radius, it just opens up a lot of things for us offensively that I know all of our guys are excited about,” Ryans said.
Now that Higgins has officially joined the Texans roster, those expectations seem pretty warranted. His combination of size and skill could play a pivotal role in enhancing Houston’s offensive strategies in the upcoming season. The Texans have high hopes that Higgins will help lead them back to greatness as they try to revamp and return to a bright future.
