What’s best of all, the Punjab Kings have cooked up something spicy & special! They then signed Australian cricketer Mitchell Owen to replace injured Glenn Maxwell. This decision follows Maxwell going down with a fractured left pinky, effectively sidelining the allrounder for at least the next month. Owen, who is just 23 years old, has made a name for himself in recent months and will bring a fresh energy to the team.
Earlier this season, Mitchell Owen drew national headlines by clobbering his own stunning ton in a mere 39 deliveries. His performance was instrumental in guiding the Hobart Hurricanes to victory in January’s Big Bash final. His performance put him directly in contention and proved he belongs. That success would eventually see him earn a signing with the Punjab Kings. Owen is currently participating in the PSL as a player for Peshawar Zalmi. His fate with Punjab Kings will still be uncertain until the PSL is done and dusted.
Peshawar Zalmi, the defending champions, will play their last group-stage match on 9 May. They made quite the run, including a clear shot at return engagement to the playoffs that keep going through May 17. If Peshawar Zalmi make the playoffs, it may rain on Owen’s Punjab Kings debut. The franchise remains very encouraged by what he will be able to bring to the squad once he returns.
Glenn Maxwell’s recent form has been under the microscope. The experienced all-rounder has struggled with form in this World Cup. Indeed, he has scored in single-figures in five of his six innings so far this PSL. In comparison, LBW was his highest wicket tally in this tournament, with his best score being a paltry 30 runs. He returned with just two wickets in his season in the PSL. After returning from his injury, he played in the SA20 league.
The Punjab Kings are looking forward to Mitchell Owen’s debut. They are equally excited to see how he deals with the pressures of the Indian Premier League (IPL). His recent successes, both domestically and internationally, show that he is capable of being a true difference maker on the field. As this period of transition continues, the franchise is keeping a close eye on Owen’s situation. As long as he keeps his existing commitments, at the moment with Peshawar Zalmi, in balance.
