Brian Schottenheimer Takes the Helm of the Cowboys with a Fresh Approach

Brian Schottenheimer, once referred to as “the next big thing” by the Seahawks front office, is now the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. It’s a watershed moment for the franchise. Just slightly more than three months after his appointment, Schottenheimer is preparing to help pilot that team. Looking forward to seeing him on the field at The Star before long! He is often hailed for his creative approach and cultural orientation. Though motivated by that decision, he’s looking to make a much bigger impact as the 10th head coach in Cowboys history.

Since stepping into his new role, Schottenheimer has put considerable thought into his coaching philosophy and how he intends to operate. He talks a lot about creating a solid culture with your team because to him, that’s the bedrock of success. His method is more than just tactical platitudes. He purposefully builds relationships between players and intentionally builds culture that is highly competitive yet fosters growth and partnership.

At last weekend’s rookie camp, which had an even more limited roster of just 19 players, Schottenheimer was characteristically vocal and animated. He has made the most of the opportunity to get to know each person individually, making sure that relationships are developed from day one.

“I’ve always been someone that believes in connections, getting to know these guys,” – Brian Schottenheimer

Schottenheimer’s hands-on approach extends to scripting practice sessions for when organized team activities begin, allowing him to move around and interact with players effectively. Tied largely to his infectious passion that reverberates throughout the entire program, Prime’s coaching style is unorthodox, energetic, and engaging.

“I’m a very on-the-go coach. I think you will see that with our staff. They’re very on-the-go, and great energy, great juice,” – Brian Schottenheimer

As Schottenheimer gets ready for his first season with the team, he’s done everything to assert that he will be the lead playcaller. He plans to have his hands in all areas of the club. Furthermore, he’ll remain hands-on for all involved players, with an obvious focus on quarterback Dak Prescott.

“To take two of our best players, multiply them together,” Schottenheimer said of his plan to create a 2018 return on the team’s investment. His focus on pairing top talent is part of a broader philosophy aimed at maximizing player potential through strategic collaboration.

Schottenheimer’s hand has added a host of competitive aspects to practice, having players go head-to-head and motivate one another and build bonds.

“There’s also other things we’re doing in there where guys are competing every day in different things that we’ve kind of put in there, but just they can challenge each other in a good way.” – Brian Schottenheimer

He has made adjustments off the field, recognizing that success requires a multifaceted approach. His dedication to not compromising his essential values has not wavered.

“I’ve always been someone who’s been able to be demanding, and I’m pretty good at disciplining guys. I promised myself when I got this opportunity that I wouldn’t change, because I think I’ve seen too many people change,” – Brian Schottenheimer

Schottenheimer is able to reflect on his own experiences. He understood that everyone falters when they attempt to modify who they are at their core in order to achieve prosperity.

“The guys I’ve seen change — I’m not going to name them — they weren’t very successful. And I plan on being really successful. The reason I think I’ll do that is because of my values and my beliefs and how hard I work, but also because I’m going to be me and I’m not going to change that for anything.” – Brian Schottenheimer

Players have responded positively to Schottenheimer’s methods. Running back Jaydon Blue raved about his energy and approachability, emphasizing the infectious vibes Schottenheimer brings to the team locker room with him.

“I love his energy. I mean he matches our energy. He comes in the meeting room with juice, and he likes to have fun,” – Jaydon Blue
