George Pickens is now a member of the Dallas Cowboys! This transaction, which had been suggested all offseason, officially ends his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers. This trade breaks up that dynamic and sends Pickens to new NFC North rival. Now, he’s paired with standout receiver CeeDee Lamb, creating an exciting dynamic duo in Dallas. The Cowboys will be hoping that they can use Pickens’ unusual talents to open up their offensive attack this coming season.
Pickens had his statistical upside hampered throughout his three seasons in Pittsburgh. In honesty, inconsistent quarterback play had a huge hand in holding him back. On the field he demonstrated truly elite talent albeit tempered by on- and off-field dramatics. During his career, he averaged a gaudy 16.3 yards per reception, the highest of any qualified player during that span. With Dak Prescott under center now, Pickens is going to be an animal. This transition represents a significant improvement from previous signal-callers Mitchell Trubisky and Mason Rudolph.
>Now that Pickens has been added to the Cowboys’ roster, his standing here in the fantasy football landscape gets a bump up. Some believe he’ll take a step up to even the WR3 tier. This promotion will provide even more rich layers and additional linchpins to an already powerful offensive stew. One quick note that stuck with me, dropped by Eric Karabell, a prominent fixture in fantasy football roundtables. He thinks Pickens won’t be a 100-catch guy overnight, but the sky’s the limit on the five touchdown ceiling he set in 2023. This projection reflects not only his talent but the conducive environment created by playing alongside a legitimate star like CeeDee Lamb.
Pickens has great double moves and dynamism to create separation in open field and deep. Jerry Jones and company are bound to get creative with his talents in multiple offensive formations. His propensity to get big plays can help fill out Lamb’s skill set, and even work to make him more efficient on the field. As he settles into the front office, it’s expected that he’s going to thrive in the Dallas system.
The trade does pose challenges for other receivers on the Cowboys’ roster, particularly Jalen Tolbert, who may see reduced opportunities with Pickens’ arrival. The entire coaching staff wants to get Pickens involved in their overall game plan. That move will undoubtedly create some interesting dynamics in the receiving corps.
