Gregg Popovich, a towering figure in the sports world, recently concluded an illustrious coaching career that spanned nearly six decades. Known for his exceptional leadership and commitment to the game, Popovich stepped down from his advisory role at the University of Memphis in 2023 at the age of 82. Popovich’s path to coaching was similarly lit with hard work. In college, he made the varsity team at the United States Air Force Academy. In his final year there, he served as team captain. As inspiring as his journey is, it was far from smooth sailing. After being cut from his high school team as a sophomore, he showcased his determination by leading his high school team in scoring as a senior. This emotional resilience is what prepared him for his activism to come.
At 39, Popovich jumped at the chance. After receiving an offer from his former coworker Bill Brown, he accepted the position as volunteer assistant coach for the Kansas Jayhawks. This opportunity changed the course of his career. It served as a tremendous platform for him to develop and advance his brand within the coaching fraternity. He put in the sweat and years of labor to realize his impossible dream of coaching in the pros. Years later, he did much the same thing on an unprecedented level with the San Antonio Spurs.
In his time with the Spurs, Popovich created a culture of excellence that reverberated across the entire organization. His inspiring leadership style, marked by honesty and humility, won the hearts of players and fans as well. Mike Krzyzewski, another prominent figure in basketball, remarked on Popovich’s profound impact on the game, stating, “He impacted more people in our game than anybody.”

Warriors coach Steve Kerr noted Popovich’s courage to speak up on critical matters, saying, “His willingness to speak up on social issues… I love Pop’s humility. It’s just always been a big part of his persona, his brand, his values. This combination of great competitive spirit and moral integrity resulted in a legacy for Coach Evashevski, a coach who led by example.
As Popovich steps aside from a truly historic NBA career, his legacy will last far beyond the game of basketball. His philosophy of “Pound the Rock” – a belief in steadfast persistence leading to slow, certain improvement – struck an incredible chord throughout the sports world. Kerr explained this motto succinctly: “It’s all about modesty, really. When you think about it, you can keep hitting that thing 99 times, but it’s the hundredth [that splits it]. It’s ‘slow and steady wins the race.’”
