Nuggets Secure Dramatic Game 1 Victory in Oklahoma City

The Denver Nuggets were triumphant in a thrilling Game 1 against the five-seed Oklahoma City Thunder. They were inspired by Russell Westbrook’s incredible game-closing heroics in the semifinals. In the context of this playoff game, it was Westbrook’s first showing in Oklahoma City as another team’s player. He had an overall glaring performance, including a vital assist on Aaron Gordon’s game-winning 3-pointer.

The match started off on an explosive pace with both squads exchanging leads back and forth. Westbrook was previously making headlines this playoff run, as he hit a game-winning shot in Game 4 against the LA Clippers. His defensive player of the year worthy play didn’t stop there, he was a huge part in this Nuggets win as well. Gordon’s offensive explosion would prove to be critical, as he tallied 22 points and corralled 14 boards. His contributions were critical to her historic defeat. With support from Alex Caruso’s stellar 20 points, six assists and five steals, the Nuggets prevailed after a brutal seven-game series with the Clippers.

Nikola Jokic was equally critical for Denver, though his game will be overshadowed by controversy. In the second half, he got called for a flagrant foul. He helicoptered Lu Dort with an elbow to the cranium on a regular layup. This foul became Jokic’s fifth of the game and left him sidelined during crucial stretches. Dort took full advantage, converting on two free throws that helped keep the door open for Oklahoma City’s stunning upset of the Lakers.

The Thunder received a strong showing from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who led all scorers with 33 points, in addition to contributing 10 rebounds and eight assists. Jamal Murray keyed Denver’s offensive avalanche with 21 points. Oklahoma City did everything to protect their razor-thin lead until the tide turned when Chet Holmgren sank two important free throws. Yet, they now found themselves in a tenuous spot.

As the clock ticked down, the Thunder had one last heave but were unable to convert. The Nuggets took advantage and won the first game of the best-of-seven playoff series. It was an especially painful loss for Oklahoma City. They hadn’t played in more than a week, having swept the Memphis Grizzlies in the first round.
