Former Australian cricketer Michael Slater has encountered long-lasting and devastating economic repercussions after losing a domestic violence charge conviction case. Slater’s formidable career on the field for Australia spanned 74 Test matches. The recent actions that lead to his acute overdose have landed him in prison and still deeply entrenched in the throes of addiction.
Cricketer Slater made his first-class debut for New South Wales in 1993. He capped the next eight years by scoring upwards of 5000 runs in addition to 14 centuries and 21 half-centuries. He quickly transitioned into a commentary career after hanging up his spurs from the sport in 2004. He began with Channel 4 in the UK and then made the leap to the Five Rings with the Seven Network in Australia. His public persona with the Seven Network came to an end in 2021, just months ahead of starting his legal troubles.
In February 2022 Slater pleaded guilty to common assault and attempting to stalk a female acquaintance. Judge Cash sentenced Slater to a two-year community corrections order, but stressed the seriousness of Slater’s plight. A judge stated, “Alcoholism is your make-up.” Still, he figured Slater’s rehabilitation would be an uphill climb.

Though provided an opportunity for rehabilitation, Slater’s situation worsened. While he had been out on home confinement during most of the pandemic, he has spent just over a year behind bars since his sentencing before being released. In 2024, after being denied bail, he fainted in court, preventing any immediate resolution to his case.
On November 22, 2022, Judge Glen Cash issued Slater a partly suspended four-year prison sentence for the charges of ongoing domestic violence. This decision is a reaffirmation of the court’s commitment to address the severity of his crimes. Yet at the same time, it does not ignore the difficult impact his struggles with addiction cause.
Slater is going through a stormy period in his life. His efforts are already creating waves through the sporting community and beyond. His fall from grace serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of domestic violence and the importance of addressing underlying issues such as addiction.
