Jim Nantz Envisions 100th Masters as Potential Retirement Milestone

Jim Nantz, the iconic voice behind CBS's golf broadcasts, is contemplating a significant milestone for his career's conclusion. Scheduled to retire on April 14, 2036 when he reaches age 96, Nantz hopes to still be on the air for the 100 th Masters Tournament. A number of conditions need to be met for this dream to be realized.

Nantz invented one of the Masters’ most lasting lines, “A tradition unlike any other,” on his first broadcast in 1986. Next month, he’ll be celebrating his 40th Masters. His deep connection to the tournament reminds us of the immense impact he made on the event’s long-lasting legacy. That phrase, trademarked by the Masters in 2014, is still most commonly associated with that tournament—and Nantz’s legacy.

As he approaches 65, born on May 4, 1959, Nantz still is CBS’s No. 1 Play-by-play voice for PGA Tour telecasts and NFL games. He acknowledges that his retirement plans are not finalized, and much depends on future circumstances. Interestingly enough, his health is a central factor to this possibility. CBS and Augusta National don’t just want him to stick around; they need him to stick around.

While contemplating the dream scenario of lengthening his career, Nantz stated his desire to stay involved with broadcasting.

"You know, maybe I could do this for a while longer" – Jim Nantz

His plan to achieve his retirement goal is not a sure thing. For Nantz to be able to broadcast the 100th Masters, it will take more than just his personal will. In addition to all of the above, CBS and Augusta National have to perceive a significant value in his ongoing participation at the event.
