The Detroit Pistons are the surprise of this NBA year. They find themselves riding a truly incredible turnaround and celebrating their first playoff win since the 2008 Eastern Conference Finals. This photograph shows the Detroit Pistons defeating the New York Knicks 100-94 at Madison Square Garden. This win is an important step forward in their playing invincibility renaissance. This victory speaks to their competitive spirit. Retaining the soccer narrative highlights the successful cultural renaissance produced by General Manager Trajan Langdon.
Langdon inked Malik Beasley to a one-year, $6 million contract. Beyond setting the policy, he is now on the path of reshaping the team’s culture and converting their potential into tangible outcomes. Beasley, who previously shot an impressive 41.3% from deep while with the Milwaukee Bucks, adds to a roster that has already begun to turn heads in the league.
This puts the Pistons among the top 10 teams in the league for offensive rebounding, defensive rebounding, and rebounding percentage. They did well in other areas, too — second in transition points and fifth in points off turnovers. This offensive aptitude is a real testament to development and their overall resurgence on the court. Last year, they finished last in the league with a record of 14-68, including an awful 28-game losing streak.
Tobias Harris, after a second tour of duty with the Pistons, had just wrapped up his 14th regular season in the NBA. Even though he is ten years older than any of his teammates, it has been under his leadership that his experience has been put to great use. Harris emphasized the importance of learning from past experiences, stating, “Sometimes you get lost in the shuffle of what happened last year.” His presence in the locker room has been a prescient, positive influence on this team’s chemistry.
Their average age of 24.3 years old is the fourth lowest in the NBA. This prodigious youth movement has been the lifeblood of the party as they seek to lay a long-term foundation for success. Overall, Ausar Thompson has been the breakout star. He’s scoring a career-high 26.1 points a game, 9.1 assists and has an impressive eFG% of 52%. His playmaking ability has bolstered the entire team’s offensive firepower and is a testament to the talent that Langdon has been able to farm.
Pistons’ head coach J.B. Bickerstaff made no secret of the need to honor the franchise’s past while preparing for its future. “Those who come before you are extremely important,” Bickerstaff stated. He explained that celebrating previous wins has served as a North Star for the current lineup.
Even the Pistons’ team airplane has come to represent their colorful culture. After every win, it usually transforms into a vibrant dance party, increasing team bonding and acknowledgment of all their hard work. That celebratory quality captures a great change from the battles of earlier seasons.
Langdon mentioned that these initial wins have inspired confidence in the team. “That was probably the first time I was like, ‘Oh, we’re beating some pretty good teams,’” he remarked. He tried to temper expectations about playoff hope during the high point of that optimism earlier this summer. We lose that opportunity to compete, to be as competitive as we’d like to be. But playoffs still wasn’t in that mindset at that time,” he said.
Isaiah Stewart, a fellow cornerstone piece to the Pistons’ rebuilding puzzle, said physicality and grit should be at the core of their game plan. “You’ve got to have that grit, physicality,” he said, stressing the role hard work and determination play in the caliber of their people’s success.
As they move forward, building upon this newfound momentum, Cunningham couldn’t help but marvel at just how quickly the tide has turned. “It feels like it’s been a two-to-three year thing, but for us to have done it so quickly, it’s just a testament to the group of people that we brought into the building,” he stated.
Looking forward, Harris is optimistic but realistic about their path. As excited as we are our new members, the guys that have been around — we’re super thankful for that. Now it’s a matter of figuring out how to win the title,” he told me.
