Like any good team in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins made a gamble. They selected Quinn Ewers, a prodigal QB from Southlake Carroll, Texas. Second overall ranked recruit Ewers adds further elite talent to the Dolphins’ roster. His tremendous depth of experience will be an invaluable asset to the team’s capabilities. This ruling helps the Dolphins in their effort to address their backup quarterback situation. General manager Chris Grier made no bones about it — this is a major focal point for the team.
Ewer’s pedigree and recent Texas career certainly made him a noteworthy prospect, as he threw for 9,128 yards in three seasons at Texas. With 68 touchdowns to just 24 interceptions, his performance was the picture of an efficient leader of an offense. Interestingly, Ewers did connect on 64.9% of his pass attempts during his time in Austin. Despite facing challenges, including an ankle injury that sidelined him for two games and limited his performance in others, Ewers demonstrated resilience and determination.
Along with Quinn’s future competition during his tenure at Texas, including highly touted number-one overall recruit Arch Manning. Ewers now had the chance to hold onto the starting job for two straight seasons. He was tested by the crucibles of coaching one of the nation’s most unforgiving programs, and flourished. Reflecting on this experience, Ewers stated,
“I think it shows how mentally tough I am.” – Quinn Ewers
Yet throughout the 2024 season, Ewers disclosed he was entirely healthy for just three contests. An oblique injury that started after the Michigan game in late September affected his play as a whole. He indicated that dealing with that adversity made him a better player.

General manager Chris Grier and head coach Mike McDaniel initially got their first look at Ewers at Texas’ 2024 pro day. Grier walked away from the meeting feeling inspired. He’d recently gotten off a call with Longhorns’ coach Steve Sarkisian, who gushed over Ewers’ capacity to succeed in spite of injury that affected his performance.
“Sark really likes him and was high on him, talking about him playing through the injuries this year — which affected his play a little bit,” – Marcel Louis-Jacques
Regardless, the Dolphins’ development of Ewers shows that they are willing to be as thorough as possible in their efforts to upgrade their quarterback room. Grier made it very clear that “no stone will be unturned” in their search for a proven backup quarterback this offseason.
