It was a long offseason for the Dallas Cowboys. They did everything they could to fortify their wideout group ahead of the new season, as their path to talent. That said, Jalen Tolbert is now in line to be the Cowboys’ No. 2 receiver. At the same time, their eyes are set on Jonathan Mingo, the fifth-rounder taken by the Carolina Panthers at 149th overall. Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones underscored the need to bring in a more experienced player for that spot. This offseason move will solidify their depth and improve the talent throughout the roster.
At a recent press conference, Jones plead for someone reliable as a number two receiver. That’s especially important to help star wideout CeeDee Lamb. He noted that “the train has not left the station if improvement is needed from what we got on campus [at receiver].” This brief, but significant statement, continues to illustrate every step the Dallas Cowboys make towards tinkering with their roster as they prepare for what’s to come.
Cowboys’ executive vice president Stephen Jones acknowledged the potential within their current roster but recognized that the team still needs to make upgrades. Those guys have the potential to be a No. 2, but they’re not there yet. They haven’t done it. They haven’t hit that level yet. That’s why we’ve been pretty passionate about getting that room upgraded,” he added. With this in mind, the team appears poised for further changes, especially after having previously placed a second-round grade on Mingo two years ago.
In a surprising addition to a mostly defensive class, the Cowboys signed Texas’ Jaydon Blue, a home run-hitting playmaker on the ground. Blue’s insertion has the potential to provide necessary pop into the receiving corps. The team would like to be more diversified and not so heavily catch heavy on their offensive approach. Coach Brian Schottenheimer highlighted the potential impact of new receivers coach Junior Adams on the team’s offensive scheme, expressing optimism for growth among the players. “Even just seeing the excitement CeeDee has for some of these guys and the traits that they have brings excitement,” Schottenheimer remarked.
Even with their push to defend Mingo, the Cowboys went in a different direction with the draft as far as positional needs. They picked Tyler Booker, Donovan Ezeiruaku, and Shavon Revel Jr. with their initial three selections. The choice to go after these players first indicates the team’s commitment to diversifying their approach to adding talent and bolstering different parts of their roster.
Fortunately for Cowboys fans, the team is dedicated to upgrading their offensive line. To do this, they bolstered the running back room by selecting speedy Phil Mafah from Clemson with their seventh-round draft pick. This choice indicates that they want to have a dynamic, multifaceted backfield that can further enhance their ton passing attack.
Jalen Tolbert’s emergence in the Cowboys’ receiving corps has been a key development for the team. Advocates have just as much — if not more — urgent need to find a powerful counterpart to Lamb. The team’s depth chart at wide receiver doesn’t inspire much confidence about how it’s going to perform against elite defenses. The Cowboys know that more reinforcements are just a few clicks away from drastically enhancing their firepower on offense.
Longtime Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones makes no apologies for his commitment to improving his team. He pledged that they would be aggressive in searching for ways to upgrade their roster. The Cowboys have turned their attention toward 2024. They need to add a reliable No. 2 wideout.
