The Unpredictable Journey of Hunter Dekkers: From NCAA Ban to NFL Aspirations

Hunter Dekkers, the 23-year-old starting QB. He’s out there blazing his own rough trail to fulfill his dream of playing in the NFL. Dekkers’ path began at West Sioux High School in Hawarden, Iowa. All this for a kid that as a sophomore, threw 33 touchdown passes and led his team to a perfect season and their first ever state championship. His outstanding ability led him to become Iowa Community College Athletic Conference offensive player of the year.

Dekkers had another strong campaign last year at Iowa Western. Specifically, he threw for a whopping 3,806 yards, produced 32 touchdowns, and posted 10 interceptions. His otherworldly arm talent wasn’t totally overlooked, with scouts recognizing his talents even through the roadblocks that life has thrown his way.

"He's a talented thrower." – One scout who has evaluated Dekkers

After his freshman year at Iowa Western, Dekkers entered the NFL draft, marking a significant step in his unconventional comeback attempt. This new endeavor is intended to help him clear those obstacles that have plagued his athletic career. Recently, he spent three months in Tampa training with renowned coach Jon Gruden, further honing his skills and preparing for a potential NFL debut.

Dekkers’ ride hit a crucial detour at the start. He was found gambling on games played by his own team, Iowa State. As a penalty, the NCAA imposed a permanent ineligibility from participating at the NCAA level. Dekkers was one of at least 35 alleged athletes and team support personnel from Iowa and Iowa State. Otherwise, they would be confronted with criminal charges or the potential loss of some or all of their NCAA eligibility.

"I couldn't ever remember ever making that bet, or ever even thinking about making that bet." – Hunter Dekkers

A new federal lawsuit has cranked up that controversy to dangerous levels. It argues that law enforcement improperly used geofencing software without first obtaining a warrant to identify athletes betting on some apps like DraftKings and FanDuel. Dekkers' attorney pointed out that many of the athletes' bets were parlays, which inflated the total number of wagers.

For all these challenges, Dekkers has every reason to keep his head high and look to the future. When an investigation began into his texting, he agreed to turn over his cell phone — only to have it returned days later. Though he’s lost out on some chances and remains undrafted, his dedication to the craft is crystal clear as he trains, hustles and grinds his way toward professional football.

"I'm someone who is going to work his tail off no matter what people are saying," – Hunter Dekkers

Back in Tampa, though, under new offensive coordinator Jay Gruden’s watchful eye, Dekkers has been honing his craft and learning Gruden’s system. He communicates a remarkable level of confidence in how he’s been preparing, saying he’s never been more prepared for what’s to come.

"I don't think I missed a throw the whole camp, and they offered me right after the camp." – Hunter Dekkers

Now, scouts and evaluators understand how productive Dekkers can be, that year-long layoff from competitive action does scare some. Others believe playing junior college football during his last season complicates the evaluation. Though they’re disappointed, they’re still optimistic about his future as a free agent.

"Obviously, the year off in 2023 isn't good for a QB, and playing juco in the final year is tough from an evaluation standpoint. Someone will take a chance on him as a free agent." – One scout who has evaluated Dekkers

Dekkers’ story is one of resilience and determination. His history of bad decisions hasn’t stopped him from forging ahead along the path to his lifelong goal of playing in the NFL. Public opinion remains divided on whether Dekkers’ punishment was deserved. Right now, he says, he’s just focused on working hard and showing what he can do on the field.
