Tottenham Hotspur's center-back Cristian Romero has caught the attention of Atletico Madrid, who are interested in signing the Argentine defender this summer. Romero made a permanent move to Spurs from Atalanta in 2022 for £43 million. By Atletico’s own estimation, he is quickly becoming one of the world’s best centre-backs. Romero has fought through injuries this season, having lost 27 games. Nevertheless, he has since made more than 100 appearances and scored seven goals for the North London club. His current contract expires in 2027. As it begins its final two years on July 1, debate over his legacy—and future—is intensifying.
Romero's Tenure at Tottenham
Since his arrival to North London, Romero has solidified himself as a key cog in Tottenham’s back-line. He has formed quite the solid partnership with Micky van der Ven. His ride with Spurs has become a rollercoaster, playing under five separate managers in four years. The Argentine international has witnessed a significant exodus of stars, including Harry Kane and Davinson Sanchez. It’s this exodus which has caused his most vocal condemnation of the club’s transfer policy.
Romero has previously voiced his frustration at Spurs selling their key players and not reinvesting the money back into the side properly.
"Those are the things to imitate. You have to realise that something is going wrong, hopefully, they (the board) realise it." – Cristian Romero
Atletico's Interest Amidst Leadership Changes
Atletico Madrid still interest in Romero, even with change at the top coming soon. Sporting director Andrea Berta is reportedly preparing for a move to Arsenal. The Spanish club see Romero as a major coup, and one that would give them the opportunity to complete their incredible back four. His standing as a World Cup winning Argentina international only adds to why Atletico would be so keen to land him.
Romero’s contract status makes the storyline even more intriguing. As he heads into the last two years of his contract, rumors surrounding his future are bubbling up to the surface. Atletico's pursuit highlights their intent to strengthen their squad and possibly capitalize on any uncertainties surrounding Romero's long-term commitment to Spurs.
Looking Ahead
Cristian Romero’s time at Tottenham has been an interesting one so far. He’s quickly proven to be a rock solid building block for their defense. His concerns about the club’s strategic direction are still very much in evidence.
"Hopefully they realise who the true responsible ones are and we move forward because it's a beautiful club that, with the structure it has, could easily be competing for the title every year." – Cristian Romero
