Buffalo Bills GM Brandon Beane took to the local airwaves to vent his aggravations to local radio bonfiring dollar bills. He accomplished this during a recent appearance on WGR550’s “The Jeremy and Joe Show.” The conversation largely focused on the organization’s draft philosophy. Further, they did some damage control on the continued criticism of their wide receiver strategy.
Beane’s remarks were part of a post-draft weekend look back at how hectic the draft weekend was and the moves his team made. He pointed out that a year ago fans were clamoring for the Bills to draft as many receivers. Now, it’s difficult for them to understand the new unusual, particularly after the team’s historic offensive output last year.
“We just scored 30 points in a row for eight straight games,” Beane stated. A year ago, I understand you all questioning why we didn’t have receivers, but I don’t understand it now. You might think you just watched us lead the league in points. Our business is the same as theirs — to score points, get Americans jobs and win the game. Where do we need to get better? Defense. We did that.
Honing in on the defensive side of the ball has been the goal for Beane during this 2023 draft class. He drafted defensive linemen and cornerbacks with the team’s first five selections. He further grabbed the headlines by climbing four spots up in the first round to draft tight end Dalton Kincaid. The Bills would then select wide receiver Keon Coleman with pick No. 33 overall. Beane emphasized that even with Coleman and Kincaid suffering injuries in 2024, the offense was still at the top of its game.
Beane defended his team’s strategy, emphasizing that they adhered to their draft board and selected players based on their evaluations rather than external opinions. He remarked, “Like I said the other day, best player on the board was a receiver, I promise you, we would have taken him at the time.”
He touched on concerns of spreading talent too thin across multiple positions. “Our job … it’s not fantasy football to trot out the best receivers. You got Josh Allen. First thing you got to do is protect him. You can’t have everything,” he noted.
Things escalated significantly when Beane started referencing past criticisms. He remembered the time when fans had questioned quarterback Josh Allen’s skillset. “Well, you guys were bitching in 2018 about Josh Allen, you guys wanted Josh Rosen, and now you guys are bitching that we don’t have a receiver,” he pointed out.
Despite the backlash, Beane maintains confidence in his team’s performance under offensive coordinator Joe Brady, who led the Bills’ offense to set franchise records for points and touchdowns in a single season. What was notable even when star receiver Stefon Diggs wasn’t on the field was how efficiently the Bills still found ways to score.
If we had encountered a explosive fella in the very first round whom we thought would match like this, would’ve been a fit right here, we’d’ve put in our choose. Sadly, that proved not to be true. Beane asserted.
In fact, Beane just announced that there are no further signings occurring today. This has both fans and basketball analysts alike buzzing with speculation on what the franchise may do next season.
