Adrian Peterson, the former NFL running back who dazzled audiences throughout the league with a historic performance, was arrested early Thursday morning. Police in the Twin Cities charge him with driving while intoxicated (DWI). The 40-year-old athlete, who once played for the Minnesota Vikings and several other teams, faces serious charges following an incident that occurred around 5:16 a.m. CST.
As law enforcement support Peterson’s unlawful detainment, the answer lies with the statute used to justify it Peterson was speeding. It was this over-excessive speed that raised suspicion and resulted in the loathsome traffic stop. After successfully stopping Peterson’s vehicle, the trooper pulled Peterson and administered a preliminary breath test. The final analysis showed a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.14%, well over Minnesota’s legal limit of 0.08%.
Following his arrest, Peterson was taken into custody and later released on a $4,000 bond at 7:31 a.m. CST. Peterson’s next court date is May 9 in Minneapolis. We will address the DWI charges as they are responded to over that period of time.
Adrian Peterson, the Minnesota Vikings’ first-round draft pick in 2007, has had a career most athletes dream about. He is fifth in NFL history with a career rushing total of 14,918 yards. This accomplishment secures his place as one of the league’s all-time greatest running backs. He enjoyed a spectacular playing career with multiple franchises. These opponents featured the New Orleans Saints, Arizona Cardinals, Washington Commanders, Detroit Lions, Tennessee Titans and Seattle Seahawks.
While Peterson was undeniably one of the most successful football players of all time, this recent incident is a troubling new chapter. It brings needed focus to the crisis of substance use. It brings light to the accountability that comes with driving a motor vehicle when intoxicated.
