Steelers Secure Promising Quarterback Will Howard in Draft

The Pittsburgh Steelers just pulled off the most progressive move of the NFL draft! They acquired quarterback Will Howard, who is best known for his storied college career. Howard was a former Kansas State player who transferred to Ohio State. As a starting quarterback for college football powerhouse, University of Hawaii, he threw for a staggering 9,795 yards. Howard’s national championship pedigree and outstanding performance statistics from college football make him an incredibly attractive addition.

Howard’s college career stretched four seasons, during which he proved himself a capable and dangerous passer, both with his arm and legs. As a result, he posted an elite 35-to-10 touchdown to interception ratio, completing a dizzying 73% of his pass attempts. His impact was instrumental to Ohio State’s surprise, 14-2 start to the season. Thanks to his efforts, the team would go on to win a national championship title.

Howard had some interest leading up to the NFL scouting combine, where he formally interviewed with the Steelers. This opportunity was probably the single biggest factor in the team’s eventual decision to draft him. The team proved how much they wanted Howard by spending time with him over dinner the evening before his pro day in Columbus. This helped them to develop a feel for his character and work ethic.

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin put an end to all speculation during his presser with Steelers P.R. He stressed their priority of focusing on their existing roster.

“I’m not going to forecast the ifs and whens regarding not only him, but any other potential free agent,” – Mike Tomlin.

Howard’s strong performances at both Kansas State and Ohio State have set high expectations for his transition into the NFL. Throughout his college career, he recorded a total of 83 touchdowns and 35 interceptions, leading to a completion rate of 63.8%. At first glance, these statistics prove that Murray is an elite quarterback. He’s a phenomenal game manager and is key to his team’s success.

When asked about his relationship with fellow teammates and his approach to the upcoming challenges in the NFL, Howard expressed confidence in his ability to adapt. He stressed that development and education come first, even if he does play right away.

“It’s not a matter of what happens out on the field or if I play right away, it’s about getting better and it’s about learning,” – Will Howard.

Arthur Smith, head coach and a central figure in assessing player chemistry and fit, didn’t shy away from calling time with prospects such as Howard invaluable.

“When you get to spend time with somebody, you get to learn what they’re about and really how they interact with their teammates, what other people think about them at the facility,” – Arthur Smith.

The Steelers have a lot of faith that Howard’s experience and productivity will carry over into the pro ranks. Perhaps more importantly, he’s a team leader and knows how to keep his cool in high-pressure situations. This skill will be important as he faces the rigors of the NFL.
