Darren Mougey, general manager of the New York Jets, has made it official — for the third time. He addressed this year’s news involving former quarterback Justin Rodgers. Those announcements occurred during a morning press conference, in which Mougey discussed major changes in the contracts of key players and the team’s overall direction.
Mougey was involved in the meeting in which he broke the news of Rodgers’ release. This move was controversial and raised many eyebrows among fans and analysts alike. When asked if he disputes any of the statements made by Rodgers regarding his ouster, Mougey highlighted the team’s commitment to their current roster.
“We feel really strongly about Justin as our starter.” – Darren Mougey
Even with the questions around Rodgers, though, Mougey focused on the bright progress of her teammates. He announced that cornerback Sauce Gardner, wide receiver Garrett Wilson, and defensive end Jermaine Johnson would all have their fifth-year options exercised. Together, these decisions are a big deal for the Jets, who have their sights set on building a perennially competitive team.
The projected costs for these options are monumental. Gardner’s estimate is $20.2 million, Wilson’s $16.8 million, and Johnson’s is $13.4 million. After Johnson lost a full season, Mougey put his confidence in the young edge rusher, who showed his upside last year with 7.5 sacks. Finally, he reassured fans that Johnson continues to make good progress in his rehabilitation.
Mougey further observed that the deadline to exercise these options is as soon as May 1. He declined to speculate on the potential contract extensions for Gardner and Wilson. He assured them that conversations on those issues are very much still happening.
When pressed to speak to any regrets on the team’s part surrounding Rodgers’ departure, Mougey was evasive and turned the question in another direction. He focused on the now and the future for the Jets.
“I understand the question, but I just want to talk about the draft and current Jets players.” – Darren Mougey
And indeed, the general manager’s comments reveal a deep strategic mindset. Like many NFL teams, the Jets are looking ahead toward the next draft and are eager to welcome fresh talent into their ranks. As the organization moves forward, it remains committed to developing its current players while navigating the complexities of contract negotiations.
