Jakobi Meyers, the Raiders’ new playmaking wideout is set to break out and become a force this year. As for Jeremy, he’s preparing for what could develop into a breakout year. Meyers is in the last season of his three-year, $33 million deal. For his part, he’s been clear that he’s looking for a long-term deal to stay with the Raiders. His elite play throughout the last several years has cemented him as one of the core members of the franchise. His success has even led to speculation about a possible contract extension.
From the moment he got out onto the field, Meyers has been nothing short of impressive and incredibly consistent. Over the past three seasons, he has a tremendous 68.5% completion percentage. His counting stats – receiving yards, especially – have been impressive, posting no fewer than 800 yards through the air in each of those seasons. He did – most notably so in 2024 during the best season of his career. He set career highs with 1,027 yards, 87 receptions and four touchdowns in 15 games. That accounts for three games where he left the 100-yard line in the dust.
The 27-year-old receiver’s ability to perform well despite changes in the team’s dynamics stands out. He’s caught passes from six different starting quarterbacks and played under two head coaches and two offensive coordinators. This versatility is a testament to his work ethic and dedication to the craft.
As Meyers approaches the end of his current contract, he’ll have to face a shocking cap hit of $14.98 million in 2025. To further complicate the situation, his existing contract is fully devoid of guaranteed money. Still, he’s hopeful they’ll be able to work something out with the Raiders for a long-term extension before the deadline.
“I want to be a Raider for the long term,” Meyers stated, emphasizing his desire to continue contributing to the team’s success.
Meyers’ impact on the field is undeniable. 52 of those receptions moved the chains for his team, a number that put him 18th amongst his peers in 2022. His reliability is truly staggering, evidenced by only one drop over 128 targets this season. This remarkable achievement showcased not only his ability to catch the ball, but his place as a reliable key player on the Raiders’ roster.
The Raiders’ coaching staff recognizes Meyers’ value. The organization views him as the focal point of their offensive rebuilding efforts moving forward. As the 2023 season plays out, talk of a potential contract extension will undoubtedly pick up steam.
“Getting Maxx signed for a long term to show commitment to one of the great competitors in the game was one step of it,” said Pete Carroll, reflecting on the importance of retaining talent like Meyers.
The receiver’s connection with quarterback Geno Smith is equally important to the third-year wideout’s success. Smith expressed appreciation for Meyers’ skills, stating, “I followed him from New England to here and always thought he was a really good receiver.” Their chemistry on the court has upside for even more improvement as the two young players keep learning to work off each other.
Meyers’ dynamic versatility, poise, and talent are shining through on the field. Last season, he joined an exclusive club of Raiders wide receivers that have made it over 100 yards in a game. These feats have not slipped under the radar, making him an even stronger contender as the team’s unsung hero.
