Essex and Nottinghamshire are currently embroiled in a captivating day-night County Championship encounter. As they go into the last day, everything’s still up in the air. Essex battled valiantly on day three and declared their first innings at 367 all out. That left them on 91, setting a target of 345 runs, and ensuring them at least a slender lead over Nottinghamshire, who hold a daunting first-innings advantage of 213.
The event’s final took place at the legendary Trent Bridge, where England and India both fought valiantly to the end. Essex, riding on the crest of some excellent individual displays, accrued six bonus points to Nottinghamshire’s five. That leaves the stage perfectly set for a very exciting closing act as both opponents scramble to belt home the win.
Nottinghamshire’s skipper too, Haseeb Hameed, illustrated his class with an elegant fifty off the same number of balls. His controlled innings became highly important as Nottinghamshire headed into the 40-minute interval with a very solid score of 142-2. Hameed’s innings steadied his side in a tense period. He was lucky to survive the axe after a very close leg before wicket (lbw) decision against spinner Simon Harmer.
Harmer’s impact on the game was palpable after he picked up a breakthrough turn out of the rough. The Essex spinner was outstanding in his first five-over spell which earned him two wickets in the space of eight balls. His efforts included the crucial wicket of Ben Slater, who bottom-edged a cut shot into his own stumps, leaving Harmer with two wickets in the match. Harmer’s bowling created pressure on the Nottinghamshire batters, contributing significantly to Essex’s defensive strategy.
As time wore on, Nottinghamshire’s aim was to try and build an innings and get a sizeable lead. But even though their batting efforts fizzled out again, Essex’s bowlers maintained the pressure on their opponents with expert seam movement and incisive field settings. The atmosphere turned up a notch as both teams realised that every single and dot ball mattered in this closely-fought contest.
Essex eventually declared on 347. Now, Nottinghamshire have a difficult target, but one that requires care and clarity to see it chased down successfully. The last day should prove to be a heart-stopping spectacle as both squads will hit the pitch with the intention of coming out on top. Nottinghamshire’s formidable 213-run lead provides them with an advantage, but Essex’s resilience and tenacity could turn the tide in their favor.
