James Anderson, the most successful pace bowler in Test cricket history, has been awarded a knighthood. The 9th honour is Rishi Sunak’s resignation honours list. Anderson is certainly most well-known for having cemented his legacy in the sport across an incredible 21-year career. He began with his Lancashire debut coming in white-ball cricket in the year 2000, and making his red-ball debut two years later in 2002.
Anderson called time on his international career last summer with a remarkable record of 704 wickets. He’s definitely made a permanent impact on the game. He is on a tally of 1,114 first-class wickets, 358 List A wickets and 41 T20 wickets. His legacy can be measured in victories, winning four Ashes series and cementing a legacy as England’s all-time leading wicket-taker.
In light of his knighthood, Mark Chilton, Lancashire’s director of cricket performance, stated, “His contribution to the game of cricket, spanning across three decades, has been immense and he is extremely deserving of this honour.” Chilton emphasized that “his knighthood is testament to the commitment and dedication he has shown to England and to Lancashire, and he has always represented the game of cricket with distinction throughout his career.”
Anderson has recently removed himself from his formal coaching position with the England national team. He may still be able to bring his knowledge and experience to the team this summer while he continues his playing career with Lancashire. He signed a new contract just to play for the club this summer. This comes after he played zero minutes since calling it quits on international duty.
As a testament to his impact on the sport, one observer remarked, “His skill, determination, and sportsmanship have inspired millions of cricketers and fans alike, in England and around the world.” This last sentiment is indicative of the esteem in which Anderson is held, both on cricketers and fans alike.
Anderson was given much hero-worship in his final Test match against the West Indies at Lord’s last July. This moment was widely seen in England as the end of an era in English cricket. His recent knighthood has only added to his status as a genuine sporting icon.
“Jimmy’s career has been marked by extraordinary achievements, not least in winning the Ashes four times and becoming England’s all-time leading wicket-taker.”
“This is fitting recognition for a true world great who has given so much to the game on and off the field.”
