Kyren Lacy, a 24-year-old former football student-athlete from Louisiana State University (LSU), was found dead in Houston on Saturday night. Georgia authorities are looking into his death as a potential suicide that happened during an apparent police chase. His tragic death has created an enormous void in the lives of his family, friends and the football world.
Lacy’s death comes as the city faces an onslaught of legal challenges. These headaches are the result of a deadly vehicle accident that occurred in Louisiana on December 17, which killed an elderly man aged 78 years. According to police, Lacy left the scene of the crash without providing assistance or calling 911. Then, just two days later, on December 19, he declared for the NFL draft. This inside joke, too, had a profound effect on his subsequent career trajectory. He was coming off a dominant year at LSU, where he made 58 receptions for 866 yards and a team-high nine touchdowns.
In the wake of the tragic accident, Lacy voluntarily surrendered to law enforcement on January 12 and was subsequently jailed. To avoid being remanded, he was able to secure his release against $151,000 bail later that day. Despite any and all pressures weighing on him personally, he did participate in LSU’s pro day this past March. There, ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. ranked him as high as the No. 6 receiver prospect in the draft.
In the aftermath of this tragedy, LSU released a statement saying they are heartbroken.
“We’re saddened to learn of the tragic passing of former LSU football student-athlete Kyren Lacy. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones, as well as his former teammates and coaches impacted by his passing.” – LSU
As we saw from the emotional, heart-wrenching tribute from his father, Kenny Lacy, his loss creates a gaping hole.
“Our lives have changed forever and this will never be ok, but God needed my baby more than he was needed here.” – Kenny Lacy
He went on to underline the loss his family is experiencing during this tragic period.
“This has to be the biggest pill our families have had to swallow but I know the love and compassion in our families will get us through.” – Kenny Lacy
Matthew Ory, official spokesperson for the family, shared the following statement on behalf of Lacy’s loved ones.
“It is with profound sorrow that we confirm the tragic passing of Kyren Lacy. First and foremost, we ask that the public and the media give his family the space and time they need to grieve this unimaginable loss in peace.” – Matthew Ory
Kyren Lacy joined LSU for three seasons announcing his collegiate career to start at Louisiana. He was a transcendent athletic talent, but it was his promise as the quarterback of the future that made him special. His play last season launched him to the top of most NFL draft pundits’ big boards for next spring. This largely renders even more tragic his passing for those who dreamed a hopeful future for him.
