In his first knock of the Rothesay County Championship season, Essex batsman Walter laid down a marker with a destructive knock. His batting was instrumental in establishing a strong lead for his side against Surrey. His innings, played out over 172 balls and punctuated by 14 hits to the fence, was a masterclass in focus and finesse that enthralled fans worldwide.
Walter reached his half-century in an impressive fashion, turning James Taylor off his legs for a single after just 58 balls. This achievement demonstrated his risk-taking but scientific judgement style, creating a foundation for the rest of his innings. It wasn’t all about Walter, with fellow wicketkeeper-batsman Paul Walter having a blinder, with his innings of 95 runs. It was Walter’s all-around efforts that moved the needle past this otherwise great performance.
Walter’s mastery was on full display with his technique, quickness and artistry making for a scintillating performance. He adjusted his wrists beautifully, rolling the ball through midwicket for a boundary. Next up, he thick-edged a length ball from Jack Lawrence, who had otherwise looked threatening and accurate, through the slip cordon. He demonstrated his batting talent by effectively placing balls in the gaps. It was this ability that impressed both the fans and critics round after round.
Walter’s innings ended in dramatic style when he failed to hook a Fisher bouncer. It was a significant error and it presented Fisher with his first wicket in his move from Yorkshire. Instead, it sailed toward Ben Foakes. With a brilliant low catch to his right and then across his body, he put paid to Walter’s influential knock. When he was eventually dismissed, he had already made 95 runs. He only added five runs in a tortuous 16-over stand with Jordan Cox.
In fact, our partnership with Cox was key to Essex’s lifeline. Their 100-run partnership anchored a mammoth score of 356-4 at the end of Day 1’s action. Earlier in the innings, Walter played an absolutely barnstorming square cut just after Westley left us to lament the vagaries of selection. With that shot, he registered his 10th four, continuing to stamp his authority at the crease.
Beyond his marriage with Cox, Walter was accountable for a strong 78-run alliance with Charlie Allison. This mix of collaborations highlighted Essex’s intent as they compiled a powerful target for Surrey to chase down.
Walter’s positive start to the match will be crucial in the result of this young player’s major test. He anchors the innings with sublime touch and savage speed. This has left Surrey a very high bar to aim for.
