Lydia Ko Battles Arm Pain Ahead of Chevron Championship

Lydia Ko, the world’s No. 3 golfer, gets ready for the Chevron Championship, the first major of the 2023 LPGA season. She’s dealing with pain in her right arm, which just stacks on top of her preparation difficulties. The race this week, held in The Woodlands, Texas, is one that Ko would hope to perform well in, but she’s still battling discomfort.

Ko, who’ll celebrate her 28th birthday on Thursday, is used to having success like this on the tour. As a result, she was inducted into the LPGA Hall of Fame. In 2016, she won her first big-time upset at Mission Hills in Rancho Mirage, California. Her significant accomplishments have firmly cemented her place as one of the all-time greats in women’s golf.

In advance of the tournament, Ko opened up about her state of mind and body. She told ESPN that even after receiving treatment for a broken arm, she still feels like she can push through the injury.

I’ve been receiving quite a rehab on it, Ko remarked.

“It’s better than yesterday but still doesn’t feel like my normal arm,” she added, indicating her determination to push through the pain.

Ko’s coach is impressed by the similarities in her game and that of golf great Arnold Palmer. He notes, for instance, that she snaps her finish on a follow-through like the legendary ball player. This back and forth comparison only serves to underscore Ko’s ability to soar in the face of her own obstacles.

As she heads into the Chevron Championship, Ko continues to stay ruthlessly focused on her process. She is putting a positive spin on her prospects for the tournament. By nature of her experience, but her skill, she’ll have the competition at her heels. On an individual level, her aim is to put another major trophy alongside her already-stuffed cabinet.
