Luis Perez has turned into one of the best feel-good football stories. In his most recent appearance, he competed in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, winning the starting quarterback job over his peers with stiff competition from John O’Korn and Kenny Hill. Despite not receiving an invitation to the NFL combine, Perez’s journey through various leagues and teams has been nothing short of extraordinary, showcasing his determination and resilience in a sport filled with challenges.
Born and raised in Chula Vista, California, Perez’s journey to success has not been a typical one. He can rattle off his football resume year-by-year. He can pride himself on an impressive season with the USFL’s New Jersey Generals in 2022. He remembered the first life-changing moment of his trip, when a football coach connected him with Southwestern College. This junior college opportunity allowed him to put his talent on full display. Other schools saw his incredible workouts and it resulted in a scholarship offer.
In 2022, Perez had every ounce of dominance that he would need to run the UFL. His electric showing earned the attention of the Los Angeles Chargers. It was his jaw-dropping, earth-shattering performance in the UFL that blew everyone away. Because of this unique feat, he signed a contract with an NFL team.
Despite these successes, Perez went through several curveballs, including getting cut by the Rams at the conclusion of training camp. His determination never wavered. “I’m the first one there, last one to leave, and I’m not getting any reps to try and learn the plays,” Perez remarked, emphasizing his commitment to improving as a player.
Throughout his career, Perez relied on hours of watching highlights of NFL legends such as Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, and Tom Brady. He observed their tricks and methods closely, picking up how they played, adding their inventions to his own arsenal.
His career re-emerged on a new path when he rejoined coach Bob Stoops in Arlington. Although they only collaborated for three seasons, during that time Perez’s stewardship changed the team culture. As Chuck Long, who coached under Stoops, recalled, the product wasn’t connected. We were already reeling when we brought him in with four games left and he really helped to galvanize our football team. Long mentioned that Perez’s big personality and “really positive energy” helped encourage the team to championship-level success.
Overcoming all of these odds, Perez is still incredibly grounded as he reflects on his own journey. “And I want to share my story because it matters,” he stated. Frankly, I think not sharing it out would be a disservice to those who could benefit from it. His belief that his experiences can impact lives positively reflects his commitment to not only succeed personally but inspire others facing their battles.
His teammate, Sal Cannella, was one of those who were inspired by Perez’s story. He went on to characterize it as one that “nearly reads like magic.” It’s just amazing to be able to hear from somebody who has faced and conquered such tremendous obstacles during their career, Cannella added.
In 2022, Perez rampaged across the UFL with video game passing numbers. His showstopper performance lifted him into the view of scouts, setting up his signing with the Chargers. This was huge for him because it gave him an opportunity to really showcase his talent against the cream of the crop competition. I’m looking forward to throwing against a first round pick,” he told me. They’ll finally have to chance to see what I can do!”
Even as Perez has begun to chart his course through the often-overwhelming world of the football professional, his story has inspired countless young footballers just like Perez. His inspiring journey is one defined by resilience, determination, and an indomitable belief in oneself.
