Great Britain Cricket Team Discussed for LA 2028 Olympics

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has good news! With cricket set to make a return to the Olympics at the upcoming Los Angeles 2028 Games, with a six-team T20 tournament for both men’s and women’s tournaments taking place as well. This decision has sparked discussions about the formation of a Great Britain (GB) cricket team, which could compete in this highly anticipated event.

The cricket quadrangulars will allow teams to draft squads of as many as 15 combatants. How they’ll qualify for these new events is still up in the air. Cricket has not been at the Olympics since 1900. Great Britain won the only one-off final, beating France by 158 runs, in Paris. Most remarkably, the Netherlands and Belgium both dropped out of that tournament, leaving just two teams to fight it out.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) recently revealed that it is in advanced talks to establish a Team GB cricket team. They’ve started having conversations with Cricket Scotland to bring this to life. These discussions have already begun as both organizations get ready for cricket’s return to the Olympic arena. Trudy Lindblade, chief executive of Cricket Scotland, has been at the forefront of negotiations with the ECB to make these plans a reality.

“We have a really good working relationship with the ECB, so we have been in talks with them and [we’re] in the process of establishing a Team GB cricket entity.” – Trudy Lindblade

Lindblade said the prospects of creating a GB team were exciting. Love stressed that the tournament format itself offers a new chance for the four home nations to work together.

“So it’s really interesting, the six teams for us, we would have an opportunity through the GB concept,” – Trudy Lindblade

With preparations starting in earnest for LA 2028, Lindblade admitted that’s a tough issue to navigate regarding qualification and team selection.

“There’s a lot to come in terms of how qualification takes place, not just for those six teams but how – if a GB team were to qualify – we have selection within that,” – Trudy Lindblade

The British Olympic Association (BOA) has been very aggressive in pursuing these opportunities across all sports. They want to bring together the football associations of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland under one banner to create a men’s football team for the 2028 Games. Meanwhile, England recently fell short in its bid to qualify for the women’s football competition at the Paris 2024 Games.

While these things are still being laid out, momentum has started to build around forming a competitive Team GB cricket team for the 2024 Olympics. Cricket is a sport with a very long history of more than 100 years. Its return to this renowned international event offers exciting prospects for athletes and fans to experience first-hand.
