Rangers’ Kirsty Howat is the SWPL Player of the Month for March. She had a great month finishing with four goals added on the board. Her contributions were integral in helping Rangers stay in the race for a title. They now sit one point behind joint leaders Glasgow City and Hibernian.
In March, Howat’s efforts helped her team to an unbeaten record, contributing to Rangers’ overall success. The team celebrated a dominant 5-0 victory against Hibernian in the Sky Sports Cup final, demonstrating their strong form as they approach the business end of the season.
Sophie Townsley, currently on loan from Rangers and playing for Hamilton Accies, received recognition by winning the SWPL 2 Player of the Month award for the second time this season. Townsley really came good in March, where he scored seven goals in total, four of which came in one crazy game against Ayr United. Her exceptional displays in goal have only solidified Hamilton Accies’ lead at the top of the SWPL 2 table.
Through March, Hamilton Accies accumulated seven points from a potential nine, increasing their cushion at the top of the league. Townsley’s consistency and goal-scoring ability have been key for her side as they remain in a promotion playoff spot, continuing to fight for promotion.
The competition for the SWPL 2 Player of the Month award was just as strong. Indeed, Townsley only just edged out other stars of the season including Olivia Hurrell at St Johnstone and Gartcairn’s Jade Wilson. Now her performances are the best realization of her genius. Yet they show the true depth of Hamilton Accies’ spirit as a club as they aim for bigger and better things.
As the season comes to schools across the state, both Howat and Townsley have shown great talent and tenacity on the field. Their success highlights the immensely increasing competitiveness in women’s football in Scotland, especially in the SWPL.
