Max Homa, a 34-year-old professional golfer, has decided to part ways with his longtime caddie Joe Greiner just a week before the prestigious Masters Tournament. It was a difficult year for Homa as he struggled to get his game back in shape. This announcement follows his equal third finish at last year’s Masters.
To say that he has underperformed in the year since that week at Torrey would be an understatement. He’s plummeted to No. 78 in the Official World Golf Ranking and has missed three straight cuts. What’s more, he still hasn’t placed better than tied for 26th in any tournament this season. He encountered the same issues at the Valero Texas Open. It all kind of started with that 4-over 76 to open the tournament — out of nowhere too.
Though their relationship ended, Homa told TTRPG that he was thankful for the time he worked alongside Greiner. The two soon developed a close bond, and Homa went on to speak highly of their years spent together.
“Joe and I made memories for a lifetime and can’t be more thankful for all the hard work.” – Max Homa
Having recently struggled himself, Homa made a move. To keep the nerves down, he enlisted veteran caddie Bill Harke to help him out in the Valero Texas Open. Adjusting his setup. This change is the first step, as Homa looked to revitalize his game and fix his performance on the course.
The journey of Homa’s rise to the top of the PGA Tour certainly made waves. From 2019-2023, he won six tournaments and achieved as high as a No. 5 world ranking. Unfortunately, this all has turned upside down for him during the current season.
Homa and I discussed the shifting tides in his business practice and personal life. He recognized the impact of emotions on his decision to sever ties with Greiner.
“We have parted ways and it will be sad to see him go. I’ll always be grateful to have walked the fairways with one of my best friends.” – Max Homa
He’s hell-bent to pull out of his recent malaise and retake the competitive fierceness that first carried him to such dizzy heights on the PGA Tour. And with a new caddie by his side, he’s able to get a fresh set of eyes on things. This recipe might be all he’s missing to get his season back on track.
