Frank Reich Takes Helm at Stanford as Interim Head Coach for 2025

Stanford University has named Frank Reich, the former NFL head coach of the Carolina Panthers, as its full-time head coach for the Cardinal’s 2025 season. This strategic move comes as the Cardinal aim to revitalize their program following four consecutive seasons with a 3-9 record. Reich, 63, has an abundance of wisdom to draw on with his long NFL career. He best has a 41-43-1 career coaching record after 6 seasons.

Reich has some pretty remarkable coaching credentials. He kept himself in the national consciousness by leading the Philadelphia Eagles to a Super Bowl victory as their offensive coordinator in the 2017 season. On that championship run, Reich was instrumental in guiding Carson Wentz to his MVP-caliber season. Then, of course, he shepherded Nick Foles — Nick Foles! — to Super Bowl MVP heights in their win over the New England Patriots.

He has absolute power over the entire coaching staff, an unusual power even in athletic administration at the college level. Luck has a close, trusting relationship with Reich, established during their time together during Luck’s last NFL season in 2018.

“I could not be more excited for our coaches, staff and players,” – Andrew Luck

Reich’s NFL career also saw him accompany the Buffalo Bills to four Super Bowls as a player, primarily as a backup. His previous coaching experiences include working with quarterbacks Philip Rivers with the then-San Diego Chargers and again with the Colts. Though his accomplishments speak for themselves, Reich was met with mid-season firings as a head coach. He was released by the Indianapolis Colts in 2022 and Carolina Panthers in 2023.

“Frank is a teacher, a winner and a coach of the highest caliber. Frank’s values align seamlessly with our vision for this program and I firmly believe in his ability to maximize the on-field potential of our student-athletes while serving as a role model in all aspects of their personal growth.” – Andrew Luck

At Stanford, Reich will be developing an offensive strategy for the Cardinal, looking to develop a winning mentality with his new players. His appointment is a vital step forward in reestablishing the program. In recent years, it has failed to garner success on a regular basis.

“The unique responsibility to mentor the best student-athletes in the world, to be the absolute best in what they aspire to do, is an opportunity I will fully embrace,” – Frank Reich

Reich’s arrival at Stanford should signal a new era both for the brilliant coach and his new team. His extensive experience and proven track record at the professional level are expected to bring fresh insights and strategies to the college game. Replacing Jeff Saturday as interim head coach, Reich must now set the stage for long-term successes. He should be an indefatigable proponent for Stanford to regain its competitive advantage.
