Franca’s Late Equalizer Rescues Point for Palace Against Saints

Matheus Franca scored his first goal in English football! His strike did ultimately see Crystal Palace claim a vital point in a 1-1 draw against Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium. Franca netted an important late equalizer in the dying seconds of the match. This goal denied Southampton their first league victory since November 2nd and put them in an unfortunate position as they continue to fight against relegation.

The tie played out with Southampton going ahead surprisingly in the 20th minute thanks to Paul Onuachu’s thumping header. This goal initially seemed to put the hosts on track for a long-awaited victory. Palace’s resilience shone through as they fought back, culminating in Franca’s dramatic equalizer deep into stoppage time.

Southampton’s Struggles Continue

Despite these recent successes, Southampton now finds itself firmly rooted in the relegation zone. They’re 19 points from mathematical safety with just eight games left in this campaign. After the draw, few can blame them for feeling like relegation is inevitable. After the match, Southampton manager Ivan Juric accepted that his squad received a difficult initiation.

“We will go down, but [we want to go down] with more fight, more dignity and more everything.” – Ivan Juric

Juric’s above statements are indicative of the team’s resolve to fight all the way through evinced even in their hopeless state. They have now avoided becoming only the third team in top-flight history to lose ten home games in succession, a small consolation in an otherwise challenging season.

Even with the frustrating stalemate, Juric was proud of his team’s performance.

“I’m very proud of the way we played today and very disappointed we didn’t get the win because we did almost everything good.” – Ivan Juric

A Match of Missed Opportunities

In the sharp opening exchanges of the game, Southampton took full advantage of a stunning training ground routine to open the scoring. Flynn Downes and Mateus Fernandes combined effectively, with Fernandes delivering a precise cross that Onuachu converted into the bottom corner. This late goal incited the home crowd and seemed to signal a first home victory in ages.

In response, Palace began to play more aggressively. Jean-Philippe Mateta nearly equalized shortly thereafter, but his shot from just outside the penalty area crashed into the bottom of the crossbar. Quick shot from Mateta included Forster forcing Palace striker to test Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale. Unfortunately, it then became a blessing and a curse at the worst time for the squad.

Entering the second half, Oliver Glasner brought on three new tactics in the hopes of sparking something in Southampton’s attack. Fresh legs in Ben Chiwell, Daichi Kamada, and Eddie Nketiah couldn’t provide a magical spark to turn the tide on the game.

A Dramatic Finish

As the game neared its end, Crystal Palace started to push harder in search of an elusive equalizer. And all of their persistence paid off when Jefferson Lerma hit Matheus Franca with a cross from the outside right. Then in perhaps the most raw and resolute part of this entire match, Franca pounced just like that to equalize in the 92nd minute.

“It’s a very good point, especially how the game was. It was tough, I think everyone could see it.” – Oliver Glasner

Isla Franca scored a late goal that earned Palace the point they preserved. More than this, it was an emotional personal milestone, his first goal in English football. The draw is equally important for Palace, as they look to become established in the Premier League.
