As the NFL draft approaches, quarterback Tyler Shough is gaining attention as a solid prospect, particularly for teams seeking a reliable starter. At 25 years old and set to turn 26 in September, Shough brings both experience and physicality to the table. It’s been his performance against ACC defenses, which tend to have the younger players in their 19/20-year-old range, that has really shown off his potential.
Shough has nfl-caliber arm, impressive physicality to go with it. This alone makes him a very attractive option for franchises looking to build their quarterback depth. His ability to throw the deep ball with elite accuracy and touch adds to his luster. Shough hasn’t gotten the attention of his more heralded counterparts such as Kenny Pickett and Bo Nix. His game is a lot more similar to Jared Goff’s, with excellent reliability and game management ability.
Unlike some of the more well-known quarterbacks, Shough probably won’t be a first-round pick. Even so, analysts say he has a good shot at being selected on Day 2 of the draft. His age could end up working in his favor, leading to a lower opportunity cost than younger prospects. What they will like at the team level is his willingness to jump into a starting role as soon as everybody else is.
Shough’s plus size, arm talent and athleticism are a recipe for a safe prospect that teams will feel confident drafting. They know they can always depend on him for stability at the quarterback position. His game doesn’t have the flash of some other prospects, but it is built on a foundation of dependability and efficacy.
