Jaguars Focus on Defense as They Prepare for the NFL Draft

With the No. 5 overall pick, the Jacksonville Jaguars are already in position to set themselves up as contenders for the future in next year’s NFL Draft. The Jaguars have been very intentional about building their defense. They’ve been very active in free agency, having signed ten players to add talent and depth to their roster, most notably at quarterback, tight end, and along the offensive line. General Manager James Gladstone isn’t overly concerned about the team’s new additions. He thinks their strategic focus to the process will produce the best results in the 2024 draft.

The Jaguars had a controversial and bold off-season decision to sign quarterback Nick Mullens. Along with Carson Wentz he’s slated to compete for the starting position. In addition to TEs Long and Mundt, fantasy owners can consider the wide receivers in the mix for their own offensive business. They signed offensive liners Fred Johnson and Chuma Edoga. This adjustment is meant to further increase protection for the quarterback and improve run-blocking effectiveness.

Gladstone’s mantra was all about generating chaos on the defensive side of the ball. He remarked on the necessity of chaos in defensive operations:

“I think the ability to create disruption is, above all else most important and that type of chaos, it makes it hard for an offensive operation.” – General Manager James Gladstone

As the draft approaches, the Jaguars face critical decisions regarding their roster. Their biggest needs are DT, corner, safety, offensive playmaker and edge rusher. This shift in mentality fits Head Coach Liam Coen’s focus on minimizing transfers with draft selections. He has stated that prospects must embody two essential traits: mental and physical toughness.

“We want them to be both mentally and physically tough.” – Head Coach Liam Coen

The potential upcoming draft should give the Jaguars a chance to fill these needs with elite talent. Linebacker Abdul Carter and cornerback/wide receiver Travis Hunter are two of the biggest ones. Both players are projected as top four overall draft picks. The Jaguars are targeting tight end Tyler Warren, who is known for his old-fashioned in-line blocking prowess. His talents would be a fine compliment to their existing TE room, headlined by third-year TE Brenton Strange.

>Over the past few years, the Jaguars have focused on developing a competitive roster by making smart free agent signings and building through the draft. Gladstone indicated that the team’s free agency decisions have already begun to answer some of their pressing questions around offensive line depth:

“I do think that we answered some questions there with our decisions here in pro-free agency, addressing both center and guard, as well as the tackle position.” – General Manager James Gladstone

The Jaguars are riding a suffocating defense and the depth imagination of their balanced roster. They’re setting themselves up for success this season and years to come. As the draft approaches, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how the team builds upon its foundation through strategic selections.
