With the NFL Draft rapidly approaching, teams will continue to focus on not only filling in gaps within their roster but looking for value picks. Analyst Miller has made savvy picks to fill major gaps for all teams. He’s given a huge platform to players with extraordinary gifts. Cam Ward – Miami The standout red-hot QB option of the cycle. At the same time, a clear trend is emerging for offensive tackles and cornerbacks to get much more market funding, too.
Quarterback Needs and Solutions
Miller understands that Cam Ward, the Miami of Ohio quarterback, is a big pick for his squad. He views Ward as the portal to meeting an immediate and growing need. With a lot of franchises looking for the long-term answer at quarterback, Ward’s strong career at Miami has drummed up plenty of interest. Considering his proficiency running an offense, he’s the leading candidate to take and transform a bad team.
Outside of Ward, the other quarterback who really jumps off Miller’s list as someone who would make sense in Lubbock is Jaxson Dart from Ole Miss. For teams such as the San Francisco Giants, Dart represents a huge step forward in their future development. While they have Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston under contract, they are clearly looking 3+ years down the road. It’s no longer just about winning the offseason — this positive pressure is focused on winning sustained success as teams hunt for that elusive franchise quarterback.
Fortifying the Offensive Line
The 49ers are a team with a number of needs, especially on the OL and DL. Miller reiterates the need to draft Campbell, who is known as a disruptive left tackle. He’ll be responsible for protecting the quarterback, specifically protecting Maye’s blind side. Making sure that a quarterback stands with plenty of protection in front of him is key for any successful team.
The Seahawks spent much of the offseason trying to rebuild their offensive line. To do this, they’ll need to make sure that new quarterback Sam Darnold gets the inside protection he requires. Alabama Tyler Booker was an extremely high quality pick to fit this bill too, arguably as a better fit. Booker’s physical style of play makes him a valuable asset, capable of dominating both in run game scenarios and pass protection.
Defensive Drafting Trends
With the NFL draft approaching, the Falcons are in a good spot to focus on defense in the early rounds. Miller draws attention to this strategy purposely by making Reid’s pick of Abdul Carter. The edge rusher from Penn State is obviously the best player available and one of the best players in this entire draft class. Carter’s presence on the field can significantly bolster a team’s defensive capabilities.
Further down the pecking order, Trey Amos of Ole Miss is another intriguing cornerback prospect that teams could target in an effort to build a stronger secondary. Miller’s judgment of Amos speaks to a deeper appreciation for the growing value of defensive fortitude in our current NFL landscape.
