Justin Thomas’ worst performance of the season at last week’s Masters, where he left with a 2-over 290 after 72 holes. Ranked ninth in the world prior to the event, Thomas struggled to find his rhythm at Augusta National, ultimately failing to contend for the coveted green jacket.
The tournament was doubly challenging for Thomas as he made the transition to playing without his longtime caddie, Matt “Rev” Minister. The Minister was unable to accompany him due to a back injury. As a result, Thomas had to rely solely on Joe Greiner’s services for this highly competitive event. Perhaps this impact from the caddie swap played a role in the challenges he experienced all week long.
Though he came into the Masters with a lot of optimism, Thomas was frustrated with the way he played. He had an extremely difficult time competing for that title. This has left him concerned about his prospects of qualifying for the next U.S. Ryder Cup team.
“It’s a tough spot to be in, but it’s self-inflicted,” Thomas remarked, reflecting on his struggles. Without his regular cheerleader on the bag, he experienced a different level of pressure. The challenge added insult to injury to an already difficult week.
Thomas’ final score of 290 left him well out of the running for a championship. He knew that, at least for him, winning the green jacket was no longer going to be an option. He’s preparing for upcoming team competitions, like the Ryder Cup. To win, he needs to overcome the challenges that seem to adversely affect his play at Augusta.
